Sunday a Great New York Sports Day

Sunday was a great day in New York sports. Here is a series of events:

1 PM: New York Giants vs. Oakland Raiders: The Giants took care of business early and often en route to a 44-7 whooping. Eli Manning didn't even have to play an entire half and still finished with a perfect passer rating. This should have actually been a shutout but the Zebras missed a very obvious strip and called the ball dead on "forward progress". The Giants are #2 in the current ESPN Power Rankings. If they can beat the New Orleans Saints this week, there's no reason they shouldn't be #1. The Giants are riding a 5-game winning streak to 5-0.

3:50 PM: Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim vs. Boston Red Sox: Jonanthan Papelbon, New York's #1 whipping boy, blows a 5-2 lead, then a 6-4 lead en route to an Angels sweep. Yankees fans are not necessarily happy to see the Angels, but a little pain on the face of Red Sox fans, a whiny little bitch, and Papelbum are well worth it. I guess all that "Thanking God" didn't work out so well in the end.

4 PM: New England Patriots vs. Denver Broncos: Unlike some of my New York friends, I don't dislike the Patriots. But I am not a fan of Bill BEEEEEElichick. So anytime I can see him bum out on the sidelines is awesome. Also, this caused the Sports Guy to tweet "Black Sunday". It made me very excited for the Monday call with JackO (by the way, if you haven't read this New York Magazine article on the JackO Anxiety Index, please do yourself a favor and do so. Great work on this).

5 PM: New York Rangers vs. Anaheim Ducks: I know, I know: I've been neglecting the Rangers so far this season. Part of it is that preseason predictions didn't have them being a very good team, part of it is that they switched over half of the players, and part of it is that it is hard to get into hockey with football season and baseball playoffs in full swing. That being said, this Rangers team looks really good. They beat the Ducks 3-0 on Sunday and followed it up with a 7-2 win against the awful Maple Leafs last night for their 5th straight win. I even turned down a free ticket to last night's game. Marian Gaborik, if he can stay healthy, is going to be exactly what the Rangers need. Gilroy and Del Zotto are two young, exciting defensemen. I love Dubinsky and Callahan. King Henrik is still the King. And Tortorella even benched Michael Roszival! No more ignoring hockey. Potvin Sucks!

7 PM: New York Yankees vs. Minnesota Twins: The Yankees complete their dominance over the Twins behind homers from The New A-Rod and Old Guard, Jorge Posada and some great pitching from Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera. Also, an ALDS wouldn't be complete without a Jeterian play so he threw one of those in just to piss off the rest of America so more. On a side note, Minnesota does keep it VERY classy. Twins fans, debatable. The Yankees wives, not so much. Chip Caray, definitely not. This doesn't matter much because the Twins can't play "fundamentally sound" baseball when it counts most as the Yankees complete a 10-0 season vs. the Twins and a date in the ALCS for the first time since 2004.

So the Rangers have won 5 in a row to go to 5-1. The Giants have won 5 in a row to go to 5-0. The Yankees have won 3 in a row to go to the ALCS. And the Red Sox and Pats went home early with a sad Papelbon and Bill Belichick . Who says we're not a great sports town?

It's a great time to be a New Yorker!
