Giants add Chris Canty to an already impressive offseason haul

It was just announced that the New York Football Giants signed now-former-Cowboys-DL Chris Canty for six years and $42 million, $17.25 million of which is guaranteed. After adding DT Rocky Bernard and LB Michael Boley, the Giants have now spent a combined $83 million on reinforcing their defense, and more specifically, their pass rush.

Canty is obviously the big addition here. He has played in 16 games in each of the past four seasons, and health on the Giants' defensive line has been a problem in recent years. As Matt Mosley says, $42 million is a lot to spend on a guy with 10 career sacks, but those numbers are less important since the Giants are planning to switch Canty from DL to DT. I also like the fact that he is a good locker room guy -- his mom is a Methodist minister and he used to sing in her church's choir. After the Cheddar Plax incident, we need all the choir boys we can get.

My only question is, by spending so much money on beefing up their defense, do the Giants have any money left to pursue a WR? Or will they have to depend on the draft for a Plax replacement? What effect will all these signings have on getting Eli a premier wideout threat?

Thoughts are welcome...
