Cubs surprisingly retire Greg Maddux's number

I am shocked that the Cubs are going to retire Greg Maddux's number. He is obviously a Hall of Famer, but I don't think he did enough with the Cubs for that franchise to permanently honor him.

Some Yankees fans, including Mike Francesa, criticize the Yanks for retiring Reggie Jackson's number. I disagree; Reggie did enough in his 5 years in pinstripes (and beyond) to justify the honor. Not only did he win 2 World Series (and achieve the nickname Mr. October) but he also became the face of the franchise. He is still one of the faces of the team - he has been a special adviser to the GM and a special adviser to the principal owner. Not to mention, some pretty impressive numbers. A .300 batting average, 41 HR, and 111 RBI's was a huge deal in 1980. So all things considered, past and present, Reggie is a Yankee icon and deserves to be recognized as such.

Maddux, on the other hand, does not. As a Cub, he was an All Star twice and won one Cy Young. He won 133 games for Chicago. By comparison, Roger Clemens was an All Star twice and won one Cy Young for the Yankees, along with 83 games. He also won 2 World Series for the Bombers.

Putting aside the steroids issue, based only on his on-field performance, I have never heard anyone suggest that the Yankees should retire Clemens' number. He just didn't do enough in a Yankees uniform -- and does not have enough of a connection to the team -- to justify such a permanent honor.

Thoughts??
