I've received something like this from quite a few people. Supposedly it was even on Mike & Mike this morning (H/T Paul and my dad):
Elite Company
With his performance against Cleveland on Monday night, Derek Jeter became the fourth player in major league history to total 2,600 hits, 200 home runs and 1,000 RBIs in his first 15 seasons.
Seasons | Player |
1995-2009 | Derek Jeter |
1954-68 | Hank Aaron |
1941-56 | Stan Musial |
1924-38 | Al Simmons |
The problem? It's not true. They missed someone on that list: Rogers Hornsby. According to Baseball-Reference, Hornsby had 2,705 hits, 277 home runs and 1,419 RBIs in his first 15 seasons (1915-1929). So I think the stats people misspoke when they said there were only four. And actually B-R pointed out that now 12 players have actually reached that mark before their 36th birthday (pretty nice company). But the stat that Jeter is only the 4th player to total that in his first 15 seasons is incorrect. It's no less impressive, but he is in fact the 5th player to reach that mark.
Take that, Elias Sports Bureau!
