When Mark Teixeira started out slowly, I wasn't too worried. He was known as a historically slow starter and all new first basemen in my lifetime have started off slow in New York. But the results so far have been outstanding. He is right now the Yankees MVP (and right up there with Jason Bay, Evan Longoria, Zack Grienke and Joe Mauer for the early AL MVP) and is on pace for 51 HRs, 149 RBIs, 44 2Bs and 92 BBs.
If he finishes with > 45 HRs, 145 RBIs, 40 2Bs and 90 BBs, he'll be in some rarified company. According to Baseball-Reference's Play Index (results here), which I just signed up for and am OBSESSED with already, the only two players to have those stats on the Yankees are Babe Ruth (twice) and Lou Gehrig. And only Babe Ruth in 1931 has ever reached the numbers that Mark Teixeira is currently on pace for -- and that's not just the only player in Yankees history, that's the only player in Major League Baseball history. It's still early, but with the warm weather still to come, that's not a bad start.
