Fantasy Busts So Far This Season

We looked at fantasy surprises yesterday, so today it's time to look at fantasy busts at this point. I don't want to just look at guys on the DL, because their sample size is too small to really judge. So to be qualified for my list players need to have been ranked in the top 85 of Yahoo!'s O-Rank, have 175 ABs and either 70 IP for a starter or 25 IP for a reliever, and have a current rank above 190. So here is my lists of the busts of 2009 so far:
  • Grady Sizemore - O-Rank: 6. Actual Rank: 194. .223, 29 R, 9 HR, 31 RBI, 7 SB. Besides his average, Sizemore's numbers are not really that bad. And he is currently on the DL. But before he went on the DL, he got 206 ABs and was not what people who drafted him in the first round were expecting. B.J. Upton, who struggled mightily early on this season to even get off the interstate has been having a better season. And this has hurt the Indians as well
  • Jimmy Rollins - O-Rank: 14. Actual Rank: 213. .221, 38 R, 5 HR, 25 RBI, 10 SB. Who thought coming into the season that if you drafted Jason Bartlett or Ben Zobrist, you'd be much better off than drafting Jimmy Rollins? Rollins has been moved all around the batting order trying to get him started, but he continues to struggle with the stick. If you can get him for cheap, though, I would. He's due for a big second half.
  • Alexei Ramírez - O-Rank: 44. Actual Rank: 226. .252, 24 R, 5 HR, 27 RBI, 10 SB. Ramírez was an easy guy for many people to draft because he can play 2B, SS and OF. But this has not been a good season for Ramírez with the bat. I think this was just a case of overvaluing a player coming into this season.
  • Cole Hamels - O-Rank: 45. Actual Rank: 792. 4 W, 62 K, 4.48 ERA, 1.39 WHIP. To be fair, he's been injured which is sort of expected after pitching so many innings in the regular season and playoffs last year...but many people expected a breakout year and drafted this guy high.
  • David Ortiz - O-Rank: 46. Actual Rank: 718. .210, 21 R, 5 HR, 28 RBI, 0 SB. His problems have been well-documented, but Yahoo! fantasy owners have to be kicking themselves for drafting this guy, especially considering the ONLY position he's eligible at is Utility. That's rough.
  • Russel Martin - O-Rank: 47. Actual Rank: 654. .239, 23 R, 0 HR, 20 RBI, 7 SB. This is rough for Martin owners and even more testament to the work Joe Torre has done in Los Angeles that the team can find a way to produce on offense even without Manny Ramirez. The fact that Martin qualifies for 3B or C doesn't help because these numbers are bad for either position.
  • Rafael Furcal - O-Rank: 58. Actual Rank: 606. .247, 31 R, 2 HR, 14 RBI, 4 SB. Another time to give credit to Joe Torre. Amazingly, Furcal has only 4 SB which is what most fantasy owners look for from Furcal. I think that the As and Braves are glad they didn't end up signing this guy.
  • Troy Tulowitzki and Garrett Atkins - O-Rank: 60 and 64. Actual Rank: 209 and 772. And these guys are actually improving as of late. You can't get these type of stats from guys who play half their games in Colorado. Awful.
  • Magglio Ordóñez - O-Rank: 62. Actual Rank: 506. .272, 28 R, 2 HR, 21 RBI, 2 SB. Not good. I drafted him in one league for the HRs and the RBIs and he's given me neither.
  • Chris Davis - O-Rank: 68. Actual Rank: 499. .204, 25 R, 12 HR, 27 RBI, 0 SB. And just pray you didn't draft him in leagues which penalize you for Ks.
  • Francisco Liriano - O-Rank: 70. Actual Rank: 1266. 2 W, 62 K, 5.99 ERA, 1.54 WHIP. I guess he may not be the second-coming of Johan Santana in Minnesota. These numbers are the type that brings down fantasy teams. OUCH.
  • Dan Uggla - O-Rank: 71. Actual Rank: 191. .214, 31 R, 11 HR, 40 RBI, 1 SB. I think this will continue to improve in the second half. His defense, on the other hand, is another story altogether.
  • Josh Beckett - O-Rank: 75. Actual Rank: 564. 7 W, 81 K, 4.15 ERA, 1.34 WHIP. The one time I draft Red Sox pitching, I get burned. Figures.
  • Brad Lidge - O-Rank: 81. Actual Rank: 812. 0 W, 13 SV, 28 K, 7.27 ERA, 1.81 WHIP. Well last year's run to the World Series also put a toll on Lidge. He didn't blow a save last year and couldn't seem to hold one this year until he was put on the DL. One of the top closers drafted in many leagues has been a huge disappointment.
  • Other guys in the top 100 (with O-rank vs. current rank in parentheses): J.J. Hardy (87 vs. 598), Howie Kendrick (92 vs. 541), Cliff Lee (91 vs. 300), Derrek Lee (95 vs. 249), James Shields (97 vs. 600) and Roy Oswalt (98 vs. 871). Kendrick may be the worst of these as he's been sent down to the minors. OUCH.
