Got that? Good.
-Horrible job news comes out and the market goes up? That's on the optimism that all those laid off people will spur on the stimulus package vote. Let's hope this upward trend continues!
-From Ben Smith: Senator Claire McCaskill has been Twittering the stimulus debate. This is really an amazing use of social media and a really, really good sign that the government transparency we had heard about may come to fruition. I really love this.
-Fundfire (free subscription required) has last-minute-on-Friday articles on UBS deciding to keep their U.S. wealth management business and the firm that manages Harvard's dwindling endowment is laying off 25% of their staff.
-Jason Stark, as usual, has some good tidbits in this article. I do not want Orlando Hudson on the Yankees as currently construed. They need a prototypical utility guy who can play all the infield positions. Juan Cruz may be a bargain for the Yanks due to the fact they'd only have to give up a 4th round pick to get him, and would quiet those naysayers who don't want to move Joba from the 'pen. One other interesting bit on Nick Swisher (who the Yankees should not trade unless they have a viable option off the bench because otherwise, their bench would be quite subpar): "The Braves seem to have emerged as the club most interested in Yankees outfielder Nick Swisher. But there are indications the teams got hung up when the Braves asked the Yankees to eat some of the $22.05 million Swisher has coming over the next three years -- and got turned down flat."
-The subject of Jeter's free agency is one I dread.
-Rose Art Museum news: Jehuda issues an apology and then the Boston Globe talks about how Jehuda issues an apology (H/T Sarah) and then the Boston Herald piles on (damn Boston!) as well as TIME Magazine and Universal Hub (who brings up the fact that finally Brandeis hired a PR firm...thank God).
-NYT Blog post about drinking with an interesting post about how it affects the children (H/T Sarah)
-As layoffs increase, women may pass men in the workforce according to the New York Times (H/T Sarah, again). One time that glass ceiling actually worked out to the advantage of women.
-New York Times Magazine gives the Big Fix for the economy (H/T Ari)
-The worst question in interviews: what are your weaknesses?
-Lehman is hiring again! And popular!
-Shooting down the "24 myth" (love how Jack has permeated all of society)
-And, lastly for right now, Sarah Palin named her kid after ESPN...amazing!
