Potvin Sucks!

I'm sure there will be many a "Potvin Sucks!" cheer tonight as the Rangers battle the Islanders. The Rangers need King Henrik to win some game for them and hope they can find some cap space to acquire a sniper by the trading deadline. This team is in desperate need of getting rid of Michal Rozsival, Wade Redden and Dmitri Kalinin as well and finding some capable D (I never thought I may miss Marek Malik)...but alas, not every wish can be granted.

 

But one smart move the Rangers could make was written about in the NY Post today (H/T to Sam Weinman at the Rangers LoHud Blog): sign an extension with Nikolai Zherdev. He's young and one of their best players and I think they found a diamond in the rough when they traded for him. They cannot let him get away after this season.

 

Another article will discuss how poorly the Rangers have managed their salary cap space since it was instituted a few years ago...but this would make a lot of fiscal sense.

 

Meanwhile, one guy who won't be the Yanks 5th starter? Russ Ortiz who signed with the Astros today. Amazingly, Ortiz's stats started going south once PEDs were being tested for. I doubt there's any coincidence.

 

Meanwhile, if a team needs a DH, they could do worse than trading for Carlos Lee. In a heavy OF market, I'm sure you wouldn't have to give up a lot. And while he can't field for his life, his best hitting season was last year...
