Letting One Slip

You can't win 'em all. And you definitely can't win all the Sergio Mitre starts. Especially when Mitre gives up 5 runs in 5 innings.

But tonight felt like one that slipped right out of the Yankees' fingers. Depsite 11 hits, a few walks and two Toronto errors, the Yankees were only able to put 4 men across the plate. And 3 of those were on solo home runs. Sometimes the temptation of a short porch is too much to handle.

But despite Mitre (literally) throwing away the game (by sailing an easy double play ball into CF), the Yankees had a chance to win because of the great bullpen work of Alfredo Aceves and three solo shots from Jeter, Cano and Jerry Hairston Jr (a great Cashman pickup).

But they squandered men on base and had too many Ks and too many ground outs in big spots to move runners over and manufacture runs.

The one curious decision by Joe Girardi (though not a horrible one) tonight was to pinch hit for Hairston against a lefty specialist with Johnny Damon. Hairston had already hit a home run and was acquired to be a righy bat to balance out the lineup. But Girardi went with one of the heroes of last night, Damon, instead.

In the end, that was too much to overcome. The Yankees couldn't win them all. But on a hot, muggy night in the Bronx, you almost felt like they should have.
