The End in Sight for Smoltz

After getting drilled by the Yankees last night and by the Boston media today, John Smoltz may be at the end of the line.

According to WFAN's Mike Francesa, he cancelled an appearance Francesa's radio program today and has reportedly headed back to Atlanta. Francesa hypothesises that Smoltz could be headed for retirement or even a potential release.

If this is the end, it's a sad end to a phenomenal career. Personally, I still think that the Sox could get something out of him out of the bullpen, specifically as a right-handed specialist. As Danny Knobler of CBS Sportline confirms, He has showed absolutely no ability to command his slider against left-handed hitters but seems to still have some ability to get right-handed hitters out.

If he were playing for any other team, it would be hard not to pull for him to find one last miracle out of his right arm.

Update: According to Pete Abraham, John Smoltz's career with the Red Sox is probably over, as he was just designated for assignment. Billy Traber was also designated for assignment, after taking one for the team last night.
