All of us here at NYaT are true blue Yankees fans. (Well, almost all of us.) Many of our readers are equally obsessed with the Yanks, if not more so. Despite our passion for the team, we all feel helplessly drawn to these tear-jerking photos of the ongoing destruction of Yankee Stadium.
Inevitably, we click on these links and feel sad looking at our beloved former home in shambles. We know these pictures will make us feel depressed. Maybe even angry. Yet, not unlike a car crash on the highway, we cannot look away.
I like to think of it as fulfilling our duty to salute the Stadium as it lives its final days. Or perhaps we are documenting history, taking in the ultimate demise of a legendary place. Whatever the purpose, we will provide a running series of photos, courtesy of Tom Kaminski in Chopper 880, as often as we can, so that all of you can keep track of the deconstruction process.
So, here's the latest. It's starting to sink in now. All deconstruction work to this point seemingly focused on bits and pieces. But now they are starting to destroy the outer structure and foundation of the building itself. The following photos illustrate the process by which the entire Stadium will be torn down.

Very well put. As someone who loves this team, its history, and this stadium, I find it SO hard to watch it taken apart, yet I feel I HAVE TO.
ReplyDeleteI just wish they could have imploded it, and ripped the band-aid off in one quick swipe. This slow demolition is painful...
I agree the slow demolition is painful. I guess that's the problem of deconstructing a Stadium in a residential area with a subway on the side and underneath it.
ReplyDeleteI think when it's done, they should invite all Yankee fans to come one afternoon and stand on the spot before they put in the parking lot or field or whatever they're putting there for some closure.
(BTW, Sarah isn't a Yankee fan either, but that picture of Ari was a great touch).
Hey Don't Hate. The Met's totally finished first in the "Quickest NY team to pull down its baseball stadium" contest by a whopping year. Take that yankee fans, we lapped your ass!
ReplyDeleteExactly. So many legendary players played here, and so many legendary games occurred here, that its destruction cannot be ignored.
ReplyDeleteMy girlfriend is a Mets fan (I know, I know) and even though she complained about Shea being gone before she knew it, I almost would have preferred that process. Shea was torn down in a matter of months, and was completely gone by the time Citi Field opened.
Yankee Stadium, by contrast, has been agonizing. Did we actually play World Series games in the new ballpark right next door to the vacant and half-destroyed Old Yankee Stadium?? Ridiculous! It has taken so long that, to use Sean's analogy, the Band-Aid has been removed by yanking each hair out one-by-one. It's just terrible. Please get it over with so we can just focus on the happy stuff going on next door. You know, like being the champs :)
