The trade deadline is fast approaching so it's time to look at what the Yankees will do before Friday's deadline hits:
- Earlier on the blog:
- Bronson Arroyo coming to the Yankees
- Bronson Arroyo not coming to the Yankees
- Yankees won't give up Joba AND Hughes for Halladay
- Out last trade deadline update
- Justin Duchscherer to the Yankees
- Next, from the ultimate source, MLBTradeRumors:
- Yankees scouting Ian Snell
- Roy Halladay Rumors of the Day (non-Yankee)
- The Yanks are looking at Scott Downs to be the second lefty out of the 'pen
- Jon Heyman has information on the Yankees pursuit of Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Jarrod Washburn as well as a take on Hughes/Chamberlain.
- He also states that they have "run the gamut" looking for starting pitching
- Tyler Kepner notes the place the Yankees could use some help is in pitching (who does mention the wild card in this whole arguments is Alfredo Aceves)
- Newsday says the Yankees may consider bringing up Austin Jackson instead of trading for an OF to replace Brett Gardner
- From Buster Olney on Monday:
- Justin Duchscherer threw two perfect innings for Class A Stockton in his minor league outing Sunday, striking out two. It's expected that he'll be ready to pitch in the big leagues within a couple of weeks. When healthy, he has been very effective.
- The Yankees, perhaps, who had a scout on hand to watch Ian Snell pitch Sunday, Rob Biertempfel writes.
- Baseball America lists Jesus Montero as the Yankees one untouchable prospect: Scouts who cover the Yankees organization are fond of saying the team over-values its own prospects, but the scouting consensus is that Montero is the real deal. He has premium raw power and pure hitting ability to go with it. If he can catch, he could have a Mike Piazza-esque career. More than likely, he's New York's future DH, and the Yankees' asking price for him is prohibitive.
- Rob Neyer thinks that Arroyo would be a BIG mistake for any acquiring team
- Joel Sherman links the Yankees with Heath Bell
- River Avenue Blues gives some caution to trading a Drabek from the Yankees' history of trading a Drabek (though Halladay and Rhoden are REALLY different pitchers)
- USA Today says that trade deadline rumors like this drive GM's batty
Other moves:
- FOX Sports has the latest here
- The Giants picked up Ryan Garko to play first base. Not the type of big bat I think they needed to get, but they need a few bats so this is a start.
- ShysterBall (somewhat tounge-in-cheek) says to start printing playoff tickets.
- Rob Neyer wonders about the helpfulness of the Giants newest "professional hitter"
- Keith Law says it doesn't cure Giants' ills at 1st base
- The Giants may not be done dealing as Jon Heyman links them to Freddy Sanchez
- Joel Sherman has a midday trade confidential
- For the second time in a week, the Red Sox got a AAA right-handed OF for a guy they were going to release. This time it's Brian Anderson for Mark Kotsay. Makes sense to have a couple of these guys sitting around in case of injuries or to have on the bench come September.
- Brett Myers may help the Phillies out in the 'pen
