Wo Canada! The Day After Canadian Front Pages After USA Hockey's Shock On Ice

After last night's "Shock On Ice", I was curious to see this morning's Canadian newspapers. Thanks to Newseum, here are a few of the better Canadian front pages:

Calgary Sun: "Uh-oh: Hockey nightmare in Canada"
The Province - "Lost Weekend: Canada suffers disappointment on the ice and on the slopes"

Edmonton Journal - "Oh-oh Canada..." and "The Team couldn't deliver: U.S. wins historic game on a weekend when it seemed we've blown the podium"

Waterloo Region Record: "Takedown: Canada loses to U.S. in hockey"

And the most direct out of all the headlines: Nanaimo Daily News. "U.S.A. 5, Canada 3"

And a few New York ones hailing the hero, Chris Drury:

New York Post back cover: "U.S., EH! Americans shock Canada"

New York Daily News back cover: "Red White & Blueshirt: Rangers' Drury nets go-ahead goal as U.S. rocks Canada"

Fun times in the United States this morning (where everyone seems to be a hockey fan) and sad times to our neighbors to the North. "Tremendously tremendous", indeed.

  1. While everyone seems to be lumping Team USA's jerseys in with the New York Rangers, they are actually a nod to the American team that won gold in 1960. (You know, the last time we beat Canada.)

And besides, the New Jersey Devils deserve more credit than the Rangers for beating Canada last night.

First of all, there are two Devils on the team (Zach Parise and Jamie Langenbrunner) just like there are two Rangers on the team (Chris Drury and Ryan "Don't Call Me Tommy" Callahan). Plus, there would have been a third Devil, Paul Martin, but he got injured. By the way, the two Devils players are also a captain and an assistant captain, while no Rangers player has a letter on his uniform. Also (and I could go on for hours here) another assistant captain, Brian Rafalski, played 7 season with the Devils, including their 2000 Stanley Cup win.

I should also mention who had the most points. Naturally, it's NJ! Langenbrunner had a goal and an assist, and Parise had an assist as well. Callahan had nothing and Drury had his one goal. That's 3-1, Jersey.

Finally, the kicker: Martin Brodeur. The Devils' goalie had a truly lousy game, giving up 4 goals in 22 shots to the anemic American offense. So yeah, I'd say the Devils deserve far more credit than the Rangers, even if Team USA shared the Rangers' colors.

I really cannot help myself. Go Team USA.

  2. That 1960 Team is now being called "The Forgotten Miracle" and I saw they produced a documentary on the 50th Anniversary of the event (http://www.forgottenmiracle.com/). Where was the 1960 games played? US. Where was the 1980 games played? US. They seem to do pretty well (for the most part) on their home soil).

My mom mentioned yesterday that it seems like it was more special when the amateurs played and won (especially, as Jay said, since so many teammates now play against each other and you do wonder if they give it their all when finishing off a check against a teammate). What do you guys think? I happen to like the pros competing but I wonder if I'm in the minority there?
