Stat of the Day and Yankees Winning Streaks

The Yankees longest winning streak since 1954? 15 games in 1960 according to Baseball-Reference's Play Index. This was their only streak of 14 games or more. Why is that significant?
Because somehow the Yankees were able to build a 14 game World Series winning streak from 1996-2000 (last 4 games of 1996, 4 games in 1998, 4 games in 1999 and first two games of 2000).
In the words of John Sterling: "Isn't that amazing?"

Why bring this up now? Because the Yankees could use a good winning streak (or at least winning some series). There are questions about Joe Girardi's job security and A-Rod has been slumping and this team continues to lose close games in the most frustrating of ways. Worse, Toronto, the LA Angels and Tampa Bay are all right on the Yankees tail for the wild card and the two AL East opponents have much better run differentials. Some wins could give the Yankees a little more breathing room. They start a three game series tonight against a sub-.500 team in Atlanta then 3 in New York against the Mets with Carlos Delgado, Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran, J.J. Putz and John Maine on the disabled list (as well as a few other guys). Then they come home for Seattle and Toronto. Those are four very winnable series. This is a big part of the schedule for the Yankees and they need to start accumulating wins again. Let's hope that starts tonight.
