What are “The Top 10 Reasons to Hate the 2010 RedSox”?OK, there's Jason's 10...now go and come up with a few more to add to the list. "Red Sox Nation", "Sweet Caroline", and whatever else irks you about those Red Sox can be vented below. And Red Sox fans, if you're reading, this post isn't for you.
- Fire Marshall Clay is in the rotation
- Most writers think the Sox rotation is vastly superior to the Yanks. Will thinks we’re DOOOOOOMED after trying to dispell the rotation myth earlier
- The fans think that because the team isn’t #1 in payroll, that the team is on the same playing field as everyone else. [said differently: They actually believe having a 170 million dollar payroll makes them a small market team, from misterd]
- Pink hats
- That their plan of defense and pitching rather than sluggers might actually, you know, work. Despite what Ron Borges thinks. And to spite BigRed.
- The fandom that gave A-Rod, Giambi and Sheffield such a hard time now has Papi, Mike Cameron and Beltre. (from: Andrew from NYaT)
- The Red Sox impose plan to sucker, tax poor people (from: Craig Calcaterra via HBT)
- They believe that a short porch in Yankee stadium is cheap, but the Green Monster is not. (from: misterd)
- Okay, because a preposterous sense of entitlement runs from the organization down to the fans. Look at Lucchino’s comment about the Yankees as “the evil empire” and Henry’s whining about the Yanks’ signing of Teixeira. They pretend that the team doesn’t spend gobs of money, that they’re lovable and scrappy, when they’re actually on just as much of a power-trip as their opponents in the Bronx. (from: Wes)
- The define themselves not by their heritage, but by their hatred (see “Yankees suck” commercial). (from: misterd)

Why We Hate the 2010 Red Sox
Jason over at IIATMS was tasked with a challenge: rebut a Red Sox post about why they hate the 2010 Yankees. So Jason--with the help of his readers--has helped to come up with "The Top 10 Reasons to Hate the 2010 Red Sox." But I think we can find some reasons to add to the list. I'll post Jason's list below (one of my suggestions made the list at #6) and then I'm reaching out to all of you to add your suggestions in the comments as we all watch the great ESPN Red Sox/Yankees opening night promo and think about the 3 days until we start this season for real:

At least there's an acknowledgment now that the Red Sox are no longer "trendy."
ReplyDeleteAs for the pink hats, I've seen plenty of pink Yankee hats (and some of them support breast cancer research
As for the Lucchino/Henry comments about the Yankees and their payroll, I wrote a post last summer about how the Red Sox payroll issues were created by their own foolishness.
"And Red Sox fans, if you're reading, this post isn't for you"
ReplyDeleteFine. I bite my tongue.
I think there is a word to sum up at least 50% of my problems with the Red Sox and Red Sox Nation: hypocrisy.
ReplyDeleteBitching about the short porch in Yankee Stadium but exploiting the Green Monster at the same time. Inventing the phrase "Evil Empire" while mimicking the Yankees' big-spending ways with signings like Dice-K. Criticizing positive steroids users on the Yankees (A-Rod) while embracing obvious steroid users on the Red Sox (Big Papi). The fan base's insistence on acquiring The Next Big Slugger following a perceived failure (i.e., choking against the Angels, followed by the ongoing pursuit of Adrian Gonzalez...not so different from acquiring Giambi/Sheffield in the "lean years" earlier this decade).
I could go on and on, but my main problem is Red Sox Nation's refusal to admit that the Yankees and the Red Sox are, for better or worse, 2 peas in a pod.
Wait, I just thought of another goodie. Red Sox Nation's criticism of the Yankees for trying to generate more money out of their ballpark by building a New Yankee Stadium...while the Red Sox continue to add onto Fenway Park (Green Monster seats, table seating above right field, etc.) in order to generate more money. The same principle is at work here...the rich are getting richer by improving the ballparks they play in.
ReplyDeleteYou don't see Baltimore building seats on top of that brick warehouse, do you? ;-) haha
Wait, a Yankees fan just accused Red Sox fans of having a sense of entitlement?
ReplyDeleteSeriously?
Speaking only for myself, I personally didn't discuss either team's sense of entitlement...only that Red Sox Nation tends to be hypocritical when disparaging the Yankees. Sox fans just refuse to admit that in many ways they're just like the Yankees. Like I said, 2 peas in a pod.
ReplyDeleteBesides, I think the majority of Yankees fans would admit that they have developed a sense of entitlement. It's difficult not to when you have been winning for a while. I believe that Red Sox Nation developed a similar sense of entitlement after winning 2 World Series in 4 years. Once a fan base gets accustomed to winning, it's hard not to expect (or want) it to continue.
Again, the fact remains that the 2 teams are 2 peas in a pod. I just wish Red Sox Nation would stop pointing fingers when everyone is (or should be) pointing fingers right back.
So if the Yankees and Sox are so similar - will they be antiquating the New Yankee Stadium?

Do we really need a reason to hate the Red Sox?
