My friends were reminiscing this past weekend and we came to the conclusion that it never snows in New York anymore like it did back when we were little tots. Well that changed last night (and has continued today). A massive winter storm has dumped on the New York Metro area. I gotta say, driving to work this morning (out on Long Island) was a little treacherous, but I made it in one piece. Yes London - 14 inches on the ground on LI and 8 in the city and we are at work! Try that one on.
Spring Training is now underway and SNY (and PIX) have been broadcasting Met home games. Since I work at Cablevision I have TV at my desk - I have been able to tune in for some of them. So far the offense looks strong, albeit with continued inconsistency. In several bases loaded situations key players (Reyes, Wright, Beltran) have failed to bring in a run. In one inning the Metsies loaded em up with only one out, and still somehow failed to bring in a single run. Now I know it is early - but the lack of timely (read: clutch) hitting is a real issue for this ballclub. It is very easy to blame the pen for their collapse last year, and the stats certainly seem to support it, but this team has not hit when they needed it most. So, on to the good. In a few of those bases loaded instances the Mets unloaded on the ball. Reyes (batting third?!?!?) had a grandslam last week, while Brian Schneider added another one yesterday. Hopefully it is a sign of good things to come, as Jerry Manuel spends camp emphasizing situational hitting and contact.
Let's Gooo Mets!
