First, he told Katie Couric that he never used steroids. Next, he told Peter Gammons that he did use steroids. Then, he told the press that he got his steroids from his cousin, Yuri Sucart. Finally, it was revealed that he employs a "cadre of image consultants" who ordered him to be photographed bonding with his family after meeting with MLB officials to discuss said steroid use.
This is just a fraction of the drama that A-Rod has produced in the past three weeks. The stories just keep getting weirder and weirder. What's next, a report that Madonna injected HGH directly into his ass?
No, the newest saga is that A-Rod has a cyst in his right hip. He has been feeling tightness and stiffness in the hip all spring, and the pain may force him to miss the WBC. In an interesting twist, A-Rod will not be visiting Dr. James Andrews for a fix. Instead, he will be flying to Vail, Colorado (?) to see Dr. Marc. Phillipon. (Side note: I wonder if A-Rod ever told a doctor about his steroid use. If so, and if that use occurred when A-Rod claims he was clean, that would prove even more deceit. Too bad medical records are confidential.)
To A-Rod's credit, he has been extremely durable throughout his career, having played in more than 148 games in 8 of his last 9 seasons. In fact, he hasn't played in fewer than 130 games since 1995, his rookie season. That being said, I wonder if this "injury" will impact his performance this season. Regardless, this is not what he or the Yankees need right now -- another distraction.
