Quick 24 Thoughts

-How amazing is it that on the day Wagoner gets ousted by Obama and the debate rages all across America about what authority the White House has to order a CEO of a private company out that in fictional 24 land, the White House has to decide whether to order a strike on a private company? Seems like Obama planned this perfectly.

-Jon Voight loves the cheesy lines. And I love him for it

-I can't believe Jon Voight's right-hand man played Tony, the FBI, and the White House. Guess who is the most pissed? Definitely Tony. Fuck pardons (via Cisco's WebEx, for all your pardoning needs), Tony is going to cap his ass first chance he gets.

-Olivia Talyor = Sherry Palmer in sooooo many ways. And it looks like she's getting slutty next episode. Nice.

-Freckles and Jack. Nice

-I thought Jack and Larry Moss agreeing on something would be a death warrant for Larry. He gets to live to see another hour.

-Lastly, how about this for an 8th and final season: "The country is still under attack. Jack's got one day to live. Most men would think about themselves before they died. All Jack wants to do is save America"

Think I nailed that one? We've never had back-to-back seasons (meaning one day right after another)...but this would seem to be a good occasion to have one, no? They said someone can live with the virus for one, maybe two days. It's like when they say they'll have an answer "within the hour". It's a 24 clue. And this season is getting really good!

The Gambling Sportsfan's Dilemma

I have a dilemma. If Michigan State makes the final, I am guaranteed at least a tie for first place in my office pool. They are playing the only team I really root for year in and year out in college basketball in UConn. So what do I do? Do I cheer for my wallet or do I cheer for my team?

Normally this isn't much of a problem. In fantasy baseball, I usually shy away from taking Red Sox players and even if I do, it rarely, if ever, comes down to one game that I would have to root against my beloved Yankees. I never bet on hockey or basketball so my Rangers and Knicks are safe, though I feel I missed out on opportunities to bet against the Knicks the past several seasons. The Giants are usually my only "dilemma" as far as the Big 4 sports go. I've done fantasy football which usually does come down to one of two key matchups and I do a pick league (based on the point spread) which sometimes has me rooting for teams I never should. I never actually root against the G-men, though. My Big Blue loyalty runs much deeper than any monetary value.

But college basketball is tricky. I was born a college basketball orphan. There is no team in New York City. St. John's is the closest but even when they were good, I never liked their teams. Syracuse is one New York school which has good sports teams but they were too far away to really be considered a home team. The first college basketball game I remember watching was during the 1990 season. In that NCAA tournament that year, Tate George hit "The Shot" to beat Clemson (before losing on a buzzer-beater to Duke in the next round). I really got into UConn basketball, though, watching the Huskies backcourt of Ray Allen and Doron Sheffer. The latter, an Israeli, became my basketball Koufax. In their final season, I will always remember Ray Allen's last-second, off-balance floater to cap a 12-0 run (and erasing a 74-63 lead with 4 minutes left) to beat Allen Iverson's Georgetown Hoyas at Madison Square Garden.

Since then, I've been a UConn fan. But not a fan big enough that if they lost a game, I get really upset...except when they've gotten knocked out of the tournament. So there is my dilemma. So when the Final Four begins in Detroit, I will be rooting against my wallet or my team...I haven't really decided yet. It may be a sign of getting older or the tough economic climate, but I think I may be rooting for my wallet for the first time.

Getting Excited...

As I was driving by the New Yankee Stadium, I snapped this picture from my Blackberry. Getting excited for baseball!

24 Previews

(via Watch With Kristin)

So I guess Jack survives? Hopefully not a la Michelle Season 3 where she was in the 5% immune to the virus. Interested to see how they get around this one.

Regardless, excited for the rest of the season. Once again, there's an identifiable bad guy and I'm ready for Jack to kick his ass a little.

Twitter Via OnStar?

(From @Jason_Pollock) WASHINGTON POST TWITTER NEWS - OMG, OnStar May Soon Let You Twitter From Your Car

This seems like a bit much. I think if people are really trying to Tweet while driving, there are enough problems right there (maybe rehab is in order?). But if OnStar wants to make their lives easier--and the roads safer--all the more power to them. Wonder if other services will spring up for those of us who haven't driven a Ford lately?

More Sports!

You want some more links? Well I have plenty more links (this one didn't fit into the 4 major sports, but needed to be posted:

Baseball
-Good riddence, Curt Schilling. Probably my most hated of opposing baseball players, Curt made sealed his postseason legacy by putting ketchup on his sock, injecting his ankle with HGH, and pitching the Red Sox past some curse. I don't think his overall numbers are Hall of Fame, but he will get in because of his postseason "heroics". Some people will have a problem with 216 wins, but, as I argued very well in the past, this guy should be in the Hall of Fame AND the Hall of Assholes.

-Rob Neyer thinks the Yanks should keep Gardner and trade Cabrera. Well he's probably right. But if Swisher DHs one day, you leave yourself with no backup OFs currently. Not a good place to be. I'd build up some trade value also, before you trade the Melk Man.

-Jose Tabata's wife story is getting crazier and crazier. Here's her again

-I agree, if we could get 24 duplicates of the Yankee game today, I would be very happy. Mo has been downright NASTY this spring.

-Tex will be a very good player for the Yanks, but don't expect him to live up to his contract in April: he's a slow starter.

-This is a sad book excerpt about something in Roger Clemens' life that went unreported up till now. It's not steroids. It's actually sad.

-Yankees minor league news via Sliding Into Home

-Banks and Sports

-Bob Sheppard is set to return to the Stadium this season (though I heard April 3rd is too early)

-A really nice and funny story from Buster Olney on the recently passed Arthur Richman

-Oh Tommy Lasorda.

-A Mariners prospect used to flush away his hearing aids and a Twins player has a baggy pants
issue.

-Stephen Strasburg is downright filthy. With that name, I'm keeping my fingers crossed he's Jewish as well (probably not with the spelling). It would be good publicity for our people. Regardless, he's going to make some team in the draft very happy and--because he's represented by Boras who already wants $50 million--very, very poor as well.

Football
-Football players get into the weirdest shit. Example #4815162342 (by the way, those numbers don't mean anything. Go play them in the lotto. Go. Try it. It's good luck...)

-The compensatory picks are in for the NFC East (the Giants got the highest one)

Basketball
-We're sorry we missed Shawn Bradley's birthday. I was in a Dallas area restaurant during a summer he was playing for the Mavericks and all of a sudden this enormous beast walked in. Immediately I knew who he was. He had a tiny little wife (at least in comparison). But, seriously, he was a lanky beast. People shouldn't be that tall.

-Forgot to post this two days ago, but this is a preview of what you already saw. Otherwise known as useless. Unless you DVR'ed all the game. In which case, you're welcome.

-A Bill Simmons column about basketball geeks makes me wonder if they have the same for hockey. If not, I volunteer myself to start the movement.

-Al Harrington should be benched for the rest of the season after the shit he's pulled. If they want to change this losing culture, they need to knock out stupid shit like this.

Hockey
-Crazy threat at NHL game. Not the way to go, buddy. Most people don't even know your team exists--in your own city!

-Lastly, if you haven't seen the video below of Bruins prospect, Tuukka Rask freaking out, well..it's worth watching. I imagine it looked like Tortorella in the lockerroom after the Rangers' latest debacle. Here's the full story on Rask.

ShamPow

We love ShamWow on this blog. We wrote a whole post about it Now this from Twitter @hebrewzzi

ShamPOW...right in the kisser! Vince Shlomi gets busted for beating a prostitute in South Beach: http://bit.ly/Z0NMk

Amazing picture. He looks like he's got a lot of things to worry about: one being the fact he looks like he's 65 years old

I bet the hooker was German because, well, you know it's good...nevermind...

SPORTS! SPORTS!!!!

So before Wolinsky (contributor to this blog) had a Blackberry or any other type of smartphone, he used to get sports updates from this shady, hard-to-use, voice-activated, toll-free number. It was actually a good resource in a lot of ways, the biggest problem being is that for some reason the service could never tell what Ben was saying (most of the time because he was calling from parties or bars, but I digress). So when he called, he would yell "SPORTS!" "SPORTS!" into his phone. It was quite humorous. I am telling you that because it seems like such an antiquated service right now and this occurred maybe 4 years ago at the latest.
Now on to sports links:

-First of all, the Red Sox virtual waiting room is the dumbest, most inefficient thing in the world. I rather pay the Ticketmaster fee than deal with that ever again. I waited for 3 hours before I got in (and got nothing offered to me but standing room). It's worse than the DMV.

Baseball
-From Buster: • The Yankees are flip-flopping Johnny Damon and Derek Jeter in their lineup essentially for this reason: Jeter hits into a lot of double plays -- 45 during the past two seasons -- and Damon does not (nine double-play groundouts during the past two seasons). And given that the left-handed swinging Brett Gardner will hit ninth, the Yankees will go left-right-left in their 9-1-2 spots. I truly think that where someone hits in the lineup is a bit overrated as well as going lefty-righty so much. But supposedly it's worth an extra win at some point so I'm all for it. And tiring out bullpens is good too (though I'm not sure that people will be compelled to take out a righty because Gardner's out there--I love the guy but if he hits more than 10 HRs this season, we may need to test him for the juice. Still, I love their whole lineup will be impossible to bring in specialists against. Makes it frustrating for the other team.
-Scroll down to see Jeter's stats batting 1st. Makes sense. New Stadium Insider agrees and also gives news of The Boss being at the Stadium opener. Joel Sherman agrees as well (as do many others) and says to do it if both feel comfortable in their new roles.
-$19 to park in the new stadium.
-More from Deadspin on Jose Tabata's baby-stealing wife.
-This made me laugh a bit.
-Matt Bush is fucking nuts: A witness, who requested his name not be used, told The San Diego Union-Tribune that Bush was drunk that day, threw a golf club into the dirt, picked up and threw a freshman lacrosse player and hit another one. The witness said Bush yelled “I'm Matt (expletive) Bush,” and “(expletive) East County” before driving over a curb in his Mercedes as he was leaving the campus.
-Oldie, but goodie (from our comments section): the 18 best Jewish baseball players of all time (from 2007 so Youk may have moved up)

Football
-A very sad/odd story from ESPN's NFC East blog involving an ex-Eagle and a cop...the video says it all
-Plax is looking for a deal. Hopefully this means he's coming back to the team soon...I'm thinking a 4 game suspension, probably. It seems like he won't be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Supposedly ESPN is ready for an announcement.
-Todd McShay did a mock draft where Stafford does not go #1. Interesting stuff
-Jets want them some Jay Cutler. Who are they going to give up? They have no QB to trade. Maybe a 3-way deal?

Basketball
-Rick Fox is with who?!?! Wow.
-Bill Simmons better stop complaining about the management in place currently for the Clippers because, if this news is true, the LA CLIPPERS ARE SCREWED!

Hockey
-The Rangers frustrated me last night to no end. Giving up a 3 goal lead to that bad of a team? Awful!
-News: Wade Redden is disliked in New York. News: Wade Redden has sucked a big one at times this season.

(More later!)

Reminder: Teams Schools Fundraiser

Wanted to again forward the below request to remind you once again, if you're interested, how to join. It really is a great cause. You can find out more about the TEAM charter schools here. And, if you're not interested in running, please think about donating towards me running. You can go here to donate. After you donate, please e-mail your donation receipt with "Andrew Katz" in the subject line to Kathleen at knugent@teamschools.org so that they can track donations. I can't guarantee that I'll be a speed demon in there, but I'll at least guarantee a light jog. Thanks!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi everyone,

I just wanted to remind you all to register online for the TEAM charter schools fundraiser! It will be a 4-mile race in Central park on April 5th, piggybacking the City parks foundation Run for the Parks event.  Basically what this means is that your registration fee ($35 if you are NOT a member of New York Road Runners Club) will go to support NYC parks, and we will do additional fundraising for TEAM schools. We chose this race because it includes kids races, where some of the students will be participating.

In addition to this, we are requesting that people who are running for our cause, TEAM charter schools, raise a minimum of $100 through the TEAM website (
http://www.teamschools.org/donate). We will be choosing a restaurant for everyone to meet and enjoy breakfast together after the run :)

We are hoping that with the success of this event, this will become a fun, annual fundraiser for TEAM charter schools!

REGISTRATION INFORMATION:

Deadline for registration: 3/31/09

News on 24, Big Love, Lost, Arrested, Family Guy, and The Office

The latest Ask Ausiello is up and it is chock full of good stuff. Also, although Kristin is off having a baby, Watch With Kristin is still churning out some great stuff. I'll discuss them all below with their scoop and my thoughts below in green (needed to change up the colors a bit and I figured the color of money was good enough for me).

Question: Is Elizabeth Mitchell leaving Lost? It will break my heart if she does. --Cristiane
Ausiello:
I address the murky Mitchell situation in this week's EW (on sale Friday), but this much I can tell you now: Juliet will definitely appear on Lost next season.

Question: Please give us a hint about the big death in the Lost finale. --Bill
Ausiello:
Just this one: That's not what people will be talking about the next morning. Trust me.

Ok...need to get more into that Lost episode from last night, so I put this one first. I already talked about Juliet last night, so let's get into the other stuff...First, although I haven't seen Doc Jensen's recap go live (he's killing me), I did find this little bit he wrote last night. The two points here that I wanted to bring up were Sayid's giggle and Ben's book. Sayid's giggle seemed the moment he finally got what his purpose was back on the island. I had a feeling that the whole episode was building him up to kill little Ben, but that laugh confirmed it. Also, this writer wrote a book called The Wheel of Time? I really do wonder if the Others gave him a reading list before he became a part of them so that he could learn a lot more about The Island.

I also decided to check out Wikipedia's episode list to see how many we've gone through (It ends up Big Lead did the same thing). Can you believe this was only #10? It seems like so much has happened this season! The name of the next two episodes are "Whatever Happened, Happened" (a Kate-centric episode) and "Dead is Dead" (a Ben-centric episode). Those two statements sound like a very Faraday-like thing to say. I wonder if we're going to find out what happened to Kate/Aaron before they returned a few episodes sooner than the final episode. Speaking of the final episode (it's two hours), that name is "The Incident". So Ausiello seems to think we won't be talking about the death the next day which makes me think we are heading for Yi Jeon/Aaron wedding-type shocker (or how about Desmond's son, Charlie for Aaron?). Though others think that the wedding will be a flashback to Jin & Sun's. Interesting...

My favorite quote from last night: "A 12-year-old Ben Linus brought me chicken-salad sandwich. How do you think I'm doing?" —Sayid

Beginning to feel more and more like Desmond or Juliet are our two biggest candidates for a big death in the season finale. Neither one are part of the Oceanic flight so they may be expendable in this whole island journey. And if Penny has been harmed or Juliet/Sawyer is over, both are again, dare I say it, lost. Though I do like theory going around that Desmond will be shipwrecked back on the island (reliving his past experience). Can't wait!

Question: The Office? Pretty please (with cherries and anything else that you especially like on top)!? --Laura
Ausiello:
I'm partial to rainbow sprinkles and crushed Oreos. Regarding Office scoop, we'll soon learn that Ryan pulled a Margene during his time away. (Ask a Big Love fan; they'll know what I'm getting at.)

Question: Do you have any more scoop about The Office? I'm starting to feel like Andy without a penny for his loafers. --Tiffany
Ausiello:
Think Michael's abrupt resignation last week was nothing more than a one- or two-episode sweeps stunt? Think again. Not only will his departure stick, he'll decide to start up his own paper company  -- presumably one that competes directly with Dunder Miff!

So what exactly did Ryan do in his time away? Dye his hair blond or start up his own business and make a lot of money? I'm not a huge fan of his character but interested to see what happens when he comes back. And I'm pumped (practically busting) to see Michael start his own company. Does anyone leave to join him? Jim? Pam? Dwight? Andy? I can't wait to see what this looks like. Considering Michael's total lack of knowledge in most areas of life, I'm going to be very interested to see how he starts his own business. Especially since I don't think he has that much spending money after Jan seemed to clean him out.

Question: You were right, the Big Love finale did not disappoint! HBO has a new best show. And how good was Chloe Sevigny? If she doesn't get any Emmy love, there's going to be at least one angry person out there. --Octavis
Ausiello:
Make that two. Three if you count my colleague, Nicholas Fonseca. Four if you add my boss, Henry Goldblatt. Tim Stack brings it to five. Tina Jordan makes it six. Missy Schwartz is seven. Jeremy Medina is eight. Kristen Baldwin = nine. Annie Barrett's 10. Dalton Ross, 11. Margeaux Watson, 12. Ken Tucker, 13...

Question: Is it too early to ask for Season 4 Big Love scoop? --Mari
Ausiello:
It's never too early. We have not seen the last of Ana (a.k.a. Wife No. 4). I'll have more on that later in the week.

Question: Did Roman really die in the Big Love finale? --Melanie
Ausiello:
Yes. That's why I labeled
this story "Who's gonna die?" and not "Who might die?"

I actually think that all three wives are deserving of Emmy love. Throw in Sarah's character in there as well and I think you may have too much competition for the same show. But I'll go on record as #14. She makes you dislike her and feel for her all at the same time. But I'm excited to see how they bring back Ana. It seems like she would be gone but maybe a chance encounter will bring her back? Lastly, RIP Roman. I just started watching Big Love recently (caught up really quickly), but I truly believe the season finale was one of the best of any show I've seen. And the death of Roman was the way to end it. The man had everyone gunning for him, but it took Joey snapping for someone to finally do it. I don't think the problems with the compound end with Roman dying as Alby doesn't seem like an ally of Bill's.

Question: Will Rhys Coiro (Sean) be back on 24? --Bob
Ausiello:
I have a hunch Sean will likely remain lawyered up and out of sight for the rest of the day. A really good hunch (wink, wink).

Too bad...sort of liked his character. But I guess jail is jail unless you're Nina Myers.

Two more things:

-The Arrested Development movie may happen soon! Word is that they could start rolling by this fall. I can't wait!!!

-Also, for those Trekkies out there (we have a few as contributors to the blog, though one is definitely not me), Family Guy this week will be a true treat.

Lineup Change for Yanks

Pete Abraham reports that the Yankees are considering flipping Johnny Damon and Derek Jeter in the lineup. I'm not sure how I feel about the change, as both hitters have hit in both spots before, although Damon has hit primarily out of the leadoff spot. Any thoughts?

LOST Blows My Mind

Lost - What more can I say? They keep on throwing more and more at you and I think it makes it better and better. It rewards those, like me, who await each episode, week-to-week with baited breath. As you saw by the live blogging, right before, as long-time watchers of Lost, you knew EXACTLY what Sayid was going to do. Now whether Ben is dead and what dead really means is an argument for next week or maybe another day. But the show is ALL about keeping the audience guessing, talking and at the edge of their seats.

Tonight's episode looked like a candidate for good, not great and then turned huge. I like that we're finding out a little more about how people actually ended up on that plane. Hopefully we'll get that for all the characters. One of the things I know we'll get are interesting "Easter Eggs" like this one. That is the picture of the book Young Ben was reading. And when you follow the Wiki link, you find out this (I've bolded certain areas for demonstrative purposes):

Castaneda wrote that he was identified by don Juan Matus as having the energetic configuration of a "nagual", who, if the spirit chose, could become a leader of a party of seers. He also used the term "nagual" to signify that part of perception which is in the realm of the unknown yet still reachable by man, implying that, for his party of seers, don Juan was in some way a connection to that unknown. Castaneda often referred to this unknown realm as nonordinary reality, which indicated that this realm was indeed a reality, but radically different from the ordinary reality experienced by human beings who are well engaged in everyday activities as part of their social conditioning.

Wow...does that sound familiar?

In the end, I feel like my defense of Jack is justified. Do you think he would have acted the same way to Sayid as Sawyer did with Sayid's life on the line? We know that Sayid had other plans, but Sawyer definitely didn't. Also, Sawyer's whining to Kate about why she was back seemed pretty ridiculous. He had so many other more important things to worry about...did he really need to hear her motivation which we all knew--or think we know...Maybe there is something else hidden under the surface, though I fear we're going to have to wait until the last episode of the season to hear it/why Kate and not Aaron are on the plane. No basis there, but if the Aaron/Yi Jeon wedding will happen, I think that's as good a time as any for that backstory.

I wonder what this means for The Purge? I wonder what this means for Future Ben? I wonder what this means for Widmore??? Might Sayid just put Widmore in charge of the island? Might we find out, in the end, that Ben was good and just protecting the island from Widmore or just the opposite, or, as I suspect, that both are bad in their own ways? Love it and can't wait for Doc Jensen's recap!

Also, some "good" news from Ausiello:
Question: Is Elizabeth Mitchell leaving Lost? It will break my heart if she does. --Cristiane
Ausiello:
I address the murky Mitchell situation in this week's EW (on sale Friday), but this much I can tell you now: Juliet will definitely appear on Lost next season.

Well, while that IS comforting to know, we don't know if she'll be dead or alive, in flashbacks or in the present, in 1977 or 2007, or maybe just as a ghost or dream. But I'm excited to find out!

Live Blogging Lost: "He's Our You"

About to get started here...get excited!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok...so I'll try to keep up...here's Doc Jensen's preview. His best theory (or at least that I liked the most) was that the Losties were sent back 30 years from stopping Ben. Amazing. Blew my mind.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And we start off with a Ben-centric preview with some Sayid mixed in. Maybe we'll see some more about their relationship???
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So Sayid got into killing at a young age...grrrrreat
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Love that all my shows are coming together: got someone from Mad Men, 24, etc.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Paul (from the aforementioned Mad Men) says that Sayid doesn't need to eat because he's an other. Are the Others actually dead? Not human? Will we find out soon?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This movie Observe and Report looks good. Maybe it's just because I like Seth Rogen. But Variety liked it too (or not? hard to tell with them). So maybe it's not just me.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Moscow, guy running, is Sayid after him?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yup. He is quite the smooth assassin. I wonder if he'll have to kill Ben at some point. Although Sawyer, Kate and others have killed, he seems like the only natural.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sayid on the other side of the captivity...love the juxtaposition and his look when he saw the cutters (I thought they were for fingers as well)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I feel like Juliet is saying what a lot of viewers are saying: is this it for Juliet/Sawyer and for Sawyer and Juliet's perfect world.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah...Sawyer's perfect world is crumbling. Amazing part is that he just says "I've built trust here" when he infiltrated their group by lying to him (even his name is a lie). But to give him the benefit, it's about as honest as he's ever lived--except maybe in his relationship with Kate. Which brings up a whole new issue we all knew we'd have to deal with at some point. I think Sawyer had started to hope the Oceanic 6 would never show up again, but you got to figure Juliet feels even more strongly.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hurley works in the kitchen? Love it!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Who is this Holden dude? I'm figuring he's like Johnson from 24.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Even Sayid can't stand watching Young Ben getting some verbal abuse from his Pop.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think that Ben had some people he wanted dead and he made up this whole story. Those people who are sitting in front of Hurley's mental institution are probably hired by Ben to stage this whole thing. Maybe he needs to get back to the island to stop the Losties from stopping him. You knew he couldn't go his whole life without getting back to the island even though he said when he turned the wheel that he couldn't go back
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is Ben going to intervene here to try to save Sayid?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"He's Our You". Now I get the name. Very interesting. Real juxtaposition.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not a huge Ben Affleck fan, but State of Play looks like it has a chance of being really good.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I may know one or two people who have T-Mobile. But it's not because of their commercials. They do a good job.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So they're promoting the Unusuals by using one of the worst Lost characters of all time, Michael? Not the best move...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And now our intro to Ilana. "Rib-eye, bloody". Love it!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I can't wait for this recap tomorrow. It was hilarious. Mad props for the Ack Attack.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kate and Juliet working on cars...love it. Awk-ward. Juliet could have assigned her anywhere, but she kept her close. Juliet still has some Other in her I guess.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So Michelle Dessler goes from Tony's Soul Patch to Horace's...um...yeah
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Whoa Sawyer...way to abandon your friend in his time of need. Voting just to make it unanimous? Weak. I guess he really does value keeping this life.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How can they even say the Haunting in Connecticut is based on a true story? What true story is that? Send me some evidence
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Whoa...nice job there by Ilana. Paid to bring him to Guam? I don't think she was hired by anyone that wants to keep him off the island...just throwing that out there
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Uh Oh...Sawyer needs some help
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
...and he goes to Kate. To find out her purpose? Or to ask why she came back to ruin his life? Though it seems like she came back for a Mr. LaFleur
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Think Ben planned this?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yup! Knew he was going to break out Sayid. But whoa?! That's why Sayid is there? Is that why Ben needed him back there? To change his destiny? To change his destiny? I'm so confused...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Interesting theory via Twitter from @benjgc #Lost Flamebus ftw! Jack is fireman/doctor extraordinaire. Little Ben knows some tricks! Is Sayid an agent of the island? That would be an alternative theory. Sayid still working for Ben or maybe he's working for the island? Why? How? Maybe he's trying to get alone with little Ben to kill him off? Or to train him? Whoa.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah...maybe it is to kill Ben off. He did say: "if I see you again, I'll kill you". Maybe he'll just do it in the past and stop him from becoming bad?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sayid protecting Ben again? Whoa. "Where'd you learn to do that?" I think Ben's dead.

WOW! Down goes Linus! Down goes Linus!

Woot! Off

Woot! Woot!

Woot! Off tonight 1 AM EST...

Get excited

Yanks Links (A-Rod, X-Man, and More!)

I have a ton of links piling up so I figured I'd start with what I have on the Yankees...

-First, everyone's favorite whipping boy, Alex Rodriguez, needs this recent hooker news like he needs a hole in the head. I really feel like if A-Rod were food, the 3-second rule would never apply: bad shit seems to stick to him. I'm sure there's a million other people doing the shit he's doing, but somehow the media always outs him.

-I'm glad to hear, though that the Yankees have actually sat A-Rod down and told him to stop this traveling circus. Enough is enough. The last thing the Yankees need is the Bronx to become an A-Rod Zoo. And maybe realizing that people don't like him will stop him from trying to be liked all the time!

-I have to take a little different stance on the 20 Most Important Yankees. I'm really doing a list on the fly here, but it would go something like this for the top 10: 1) CC, 2) Mo, 3) A-Rod, 4) Bruney/Marte/Coke et al. 5) Jorge, 6) Jeter, 7) AJ, 8) Girardi, 9) Cano, 10) Steinbros. The bullpen will be huge. If they can hold leads, this team's pitching can be deadly. The problem is that if that bullpen can't, they may be forced to move Joba back there and that would be the last thing I would want at this point. He may have to go back there at some point due to innings limits--but I don't want him back there because guys can't get the job done. Melancon is definitely a wildcard, but who knows what he'll do in the majors.

-I have to admit, I bought 10 of them, but it's of note that the Yankees sold 170,000 tickets in one day. The most amazing part of that was that basically, at this point, many games your choices were crap or seats you needed to mortgage your first born to buy.

-I agree with Steven Goldman that declaring the X-man as the starting RF just boosts his trade value in the end. And I also agree with Rob Neyer on two points (which is pretty rare): Swisher would be a better choice as a starter and Swish will get ABs anyways on this team.

-With all I said about A-Rod's personal life, maybe it's best that the Yankees got rid of Jose Tabata...though this story is just nuts

-The Yankees couldn't have given reasonably price beers? Really? Though I guess at $6 for a small beer, it's about on par for Manhattan.

-OK, Brett Gardner needs to be the everyday starting CF on this team. Especially after the spring he's had. I think he's EXACTLY what this team needs: speed and arm in CF, speed on the bases, good OBP, and a little underdog/grit factor mixed in (Lupica went a little overboard comparing him to Pedroia, but, let's admit it, "The Little Engine That Could" story was probably the Daily News' Napolean's favorite...). But I'm also all for merit and I think that he's earned it this spring: 21 of 47 with 8 XBHs. I know it's spring training (and sometimes the stats matter, sometimes they don't), but that's ridic. Even if you take out the USA game, his spring line is .409/.469/.750.

-Lastly, I thought I actually had a private, all access tour of the New Yankee Stadium (shall we call this place NYS and the old one OYS? Maybe make it easier) to share with you guys today, but, alas, it didn't go as planned. Thanks to those who tried to get it done, though. Really appreciate the effort. Still, will be posting a LOT more Yankee stuff as we approach opening day. So no worries.

Update on Yankee Stadium Food Options

Ok so I was a little harsh on Yankee Stadium in my comments earlier about their food options. Apparently others agreed with me because stadium officials told the Times that they have some celebrity tricks up their sleeves. Looks like Citi/Taxpayer Field is stealing the whole show...

Some Great Visualizations

Sometimes I like to look at where my visitors are coming from. It's a little stalkerish, I know, but I want to make sure I'm putting out more of the content that my readers like to see. Anyways, I saw that one of my posts on the shrinking market caps of banks had been picked up by a blog called "Rock The Boat Marketing".

There were a few other random visualizations that they had and they all caught my eye so I wanted to repost them here (in the order of coolness):

-The first is from Flowing Data and shows the amazing Walmart expansion across the United States. Watch the density of green dots and the store count in the bottom right shoot up dramatically as the years go on. Amazing.
-The second is from Wired magazine. It is a really cool way to show 24 hours of United States flying. It tracked more that 205,000 aircraft on this one August day.
-Next is the New York Times geography of a recession. Michigan seems to be hit the worst, which was expected with the auto troubles, but California and Oregon seem pretty battered as well. If you switch over to "one-year change", you see a lot of the big swing states of the election pop up (OH, KY, IN, TN, NC, SC, GA, etc.) and it's no wonder why people became more and more interested in change as the election came closer.
-Then we have a real interesting graph from Michael Covel's blog (by JP Koning Financial Graph & Art). Which starts at base of zero and shows how far we've fallen in this financial crisis. Right now we're pretty low on weeks but scary to see we're right in the same line as 1929-32. Oy.
-Last is from Pro Publica and shows the degrees of Hank Paulson from October and his relationship with all of those failed/failing financial institutions. If you click Richard Fuld from Lehman Brothers, and see a lack of connection to Paulson, it really is not a wonder why the government decided to let them, above all others, fail.

Very cool stuff!

A 5-Year-Old's Response to AIG Bailout

I was forwarded the below e-mail. It definitely brought a smile to my face on a cold Tuesday morning at the end of March. Figured I'd share it with the rest of you. I think that maybe the angry mob with pitchforks and torches may be the way to go to get AIG to right the ship. Especially if they look like this (may need to click on the picture to enlarge):

Had to share this one.  So after dinner on Friday, we were watching a rerun of Jon Stewart from earlier in the week and he had "The Angry Mob" superimposed at the bottom of the screen when talking about the AIG situation.  Julia [age 5] found this hilarious, even though she doesn't understand what it's about, and she decided unprompted to draw the Angry Mob.  Note the pitchforks and torches.  The original artwork is hanging in my office.

Maybe instead of the 90% tax on their bonuses, we should just send Julia's angry mob after them! I love it!

Yankee News (Including Stadium Food Options)

Some Yankee news as the regular season slowly approaches (though the weather wouldn't make you think so). I may have some new and exciting news tomorrow night, but will give more updates later on that.

-First, some really important news for my stomach from the New Stadium Insider on the food options. Dippin' Dots are out (I guess the future never came for them...) but a few new things are in. I feel like the Yankees sort of missed the boat on this one. While Danny Meyer is bringing a Shake Shack, Blue Smoke and other eateries to Citifield (and Sixpoint beer providing libations), the Yankees seemed to have played it a little differently. Not that I'm disappointed in all the choices (as long as Carl's Steaks are there, I'll be quite happy), but it seems like they could have really made a good dining experience (I'm sure many companies would have been interested in getting involved).
-Sliding Into Home has some really sad pictures of the old stadium which shows no grass left [*tear*]
-Fangraphs asks whether Mariano Rivera can defy father time? I'm certainly hoping so. But after having one of the best seasons of his entire career last year, I don't think we can expect that. Rather, I think we're looking at one of his very good seasons once again, from Mo. And that's all the Yanks need.
-The X Man, Xavier Nady, seems like he'll be the starting right fielder. In some ways, this makes sense for the Yanks who were killed by lefties last year. Nick Swisher seems to have some more versatility, though I hope he gets his 400+ ABs as well. The question really is, with those two, will Nady regress further from last season than Nick Swisher improves? Tough to tell. But I think that Swisher is better defensively and will get on base more and see more pitches (which is important for Abreu's replacement after the OBP and pitches per AB he gave them).
-Lastly, some interesting news on the Rocket and Mike Piazza from Deadspin. Just read it. I can't adequately explain here. Let's just say they may have both been on 'roids but Piazza may have been more of a wimp/less 'roid raged(?).

Lost Wedding Rumor

Wow...that's all I can say...so let me just let Ausiello tell you himself:

An ABC insider confirms that Lost will begin filming a wedding ceremony later today that is slated to air during the show's two-hour finale on May 13. Who's getting hitched? Here are a pair of clues: Actors of Asian-American descent are being sought to play extras, and the wedding will take place on the mainland, not the island. That pretty much rules out Jack/Kate or Sawyer/Juliet. "One theory is that it's a flashback to Sun and Jin's wedding," whispers a Lost insider. "But the wild rumor is that Sun and Jin's daughter will marry Aaron in the future."

Whoa...that last one is way out there but could make some sense about why Aaron didn't come back (or why he wasn't allowed to come back, rather). Remember, it was Sun, in L.A. who suggested that Aaron and Ji Yeon should meet. I wonder if that means that the two of them (and Walt? or Desmond? or Desmond's son Charlie?) will need to get together and head back to the island? Remember, his mother is Claire, his uncle is Jack and his grandfather is Christian so he definitely has a great connection to the island. Maybe all this has to happen for the prince to return home and maybe Sun knows this, explaining which she's inexplicably OK with leaving her daughter to go back to the island.
One last, very wide-spread theory that maybe we shouldn't take everything that people on the show say literally when it has to do with Aaron. When Richard Malkin, the maybe-fake psychic, says that Claire's baby can't be "raised by another", maybe it should be that Claire's baby can't be "raised by an Other". And also when Hurley warns Jack that he's "not supposed to raise him" and Claire warns Kate about "not bringing him back", the "him" in there was theorized to be Locke or Ben (the former, bringing him back to the island and back to life--in a resurrecting sense, "raising him"--and the latter being bringing him back to the island and raising him to leader status). But maybe it is all actually literal. Maybe Aaron has some destiny yet unfulfilled and is not fulfilling that destiny currently. Maybe certain turns of fate need to bring him in that direction. Either way, Lost continues to keep me guessing.

UConn men have proved they deserved their #1 seed

H/T to Andy Katz (not to be confused with our Andy Katz) of ESPN.com

For what it's worth, I think UConn has definitely been the strongest team in the tournament. Nearly every other top seed has struggled (Pitt vs. ETSU and OK St, UNC vs. LSU, L'ville vs. Siena, Memphis vs. CS-Northridge, Nova vs. American, Wake actually lost in the first round, etc.) The Huskies, on the other hand, have dominated both of their games.

Needless to say, I agree that if the committee had to re-seed the teams again, UConn would have to be the overall #1.

WEST REGIONAL (GLENDALE, ARIZ.)

No. 1 Connecticut vs. No. 5 Purdue, Thursday, 7:07 p.m. ET

No. 1 Connecticut
How did the Huskies get here? UConn has been the most dominating team in the field so far.

If you were going to reseed the event, the Huskies would be your new overall No. 1. Hard to argue the point after UConn trashed Chattanooga by a count of 103-47 in the first round and then toyed with Texas A&M in the second to win 92-66.

The Huskies lost a brutal six-overtime game to Syracuse in the Big East quarterfinals. That was the fourth straight season that the Huskies couldn't get a Big East tournament win.

Only seniors Jeff Adrien and Craig Austrie had ever won an NCAA tournament game and that was during their freshmen season when the Huskies eventually lost to George Mason in the 2006 Elite Eight. So sweeping through the first two rounds proves the Huskies, even without Jerome Dyson, are the favorite to win the title.

Who's hot? A.J. Price is torching the competition. A year ago, Price tore his ACL in the first-round loss to San Diego. This season he's making up for that early exit. Price scored 20 points, including five 3s, in the first-round win over Chattanooga. He poured in 27 points and made 4 of 7 from 3 in the second-round win over Texas A&M. If Price can continue that torrid pace, he could be an MVP candidate of the event.

Who's not? Hasheem Thabeet was a non-factor offensively against the Aggies. The Huskies relied heavily on Adrien (23 points) inside. Thabeet took just two shots, made one and converted four free throws for six points. Thabeet did dominate overmatched Chattanooga with 20 points and 13 boards but he'll need to be more assertive offensively against Purdue.

What does this mean for the program? UConn doesn't have to prove itself nationally, but this group of players was about to leave Storrs empty if it couldn't win in the postseason. There is a rich tradition of champions under Jim Calhoun and the NBA-draft laden 2006 team doesn't seem to have the same cache here after losing to Mason. This year's squad has certainly been consistent but still had to prove it could produce in March. The six-overtime loss was deflating, but getting to the Sweet 16 should lift weight off their backs as they focus on reaching the Final Four.

Drama factor so far? None of it has been on the court. The only drama was about Calhoun's health. He was dehydrated and hospitalized in Philadelphia for a night, missed the first-round game but returned for the dismantling of the Aggies.

Best. Note. Ever.

In the apartment complex at my parent's place, there are assigned parking spots. Ours is not really close to our apartment, so sometimes, when I'm only going to be there for a short time, I pull up next to the last car in the row and try to make a spot out of the end of the fire lane. I know it's not the best thing in the world to do, but it's really not blocking the traffic and it's so far away from the actual hydrant that I know I'm not blocking any rescue attempts.
But some people in my complex are crazy. Just really nuts. They go insane when someone parks in an illegal spot. But this note I received last night may have been the best. Ever. And I feel I need to do a little critiquing on it.

"You are illegal. This is a fire zone." - First, amazing use of punctuation. Very large, very emphatic periods (I've tried to bold them all to translate that effect). Very, very intimidating. Also, great use of underlining. But I do have to take some exception with this. I am, in fact a citizen of the United States. I am not, as you say, illegal. And the word underlined in the second sentence probably should be "this" rather than "fire", but I'll let it slide.

"You have endangered lives and created one lane to pass hidden on a turn." - The best argument of the entire note. Except none of it is true. And I think this deserves an exclamation point regardless. Or maybe the periods are supposed to intimidate. Three underlines in one sentence really makes me think. Though there doesn't really seem to be a pattern to the underlining. Maybe I'm supposed to use the underlined words to decode a secret message? Hmmm....

"How dare you. Park below. Expect to be towed or booted. Your plate # has been photo'd [sic].- Underlining here gone wild. I think the first sentence should have "you" underlined, but I can definitely live with dare. I really just think he/she got lazy by the end. "photo'd"? That's not even a real contraction. And what is "photoed" anyways? That just seems like you made up that word. And why contract in that situation anyways? All he/she needed to do is replace the apostrophe with the letter "e" (if you deem that "photoed" is a word). Is that letter so hard to write? I don't think I'm listening to this note after that lackadaisical attitude. Though I am intimidated by this photo they've taken of my plate #. Though I'm curious why they didn't just write it down. Obviously they brought paper and a writing utensil to my car. Why go through all the effort to photo? And should I be threatened by "park below"? Is that a threat?

"Don't park here again" - Whoa, no period at the end? No underlines. Now this person must be serious

"Expect to be towed" - OK, well I guess they ended on a good note. Though still no period at the end. Wonder if they got tired pushing down so hard to make a period.

Final count is 12 underlines, 7 oversized periods, and one pissed off resident. I am certainly shaking in my boots. Amazing note. I wonder if the person writes this ahead of time and just puts it on any cars they see parked there. I'm going to make sure to continue to park in this place every time I go back in hopes of getting another note. I can only imagine what's coming next!

Giants Interested In Edwards?

First news from The Blue Screen, that the Giants nixed a Steve Smith (plus picks) swap for Braylon Edwards. Now from ESPN.com's Inside NFL Rumor Mill:

A report from Scout.com confirms that the New York Giants had talked with the Cleveland Browns earlier this offseason about a trade that would have brought Braylon Edwards to New York. Although several different options were discussed - draft picks, Steve Smith, Mario Manningham, Domenik Hixon - there was no mention of Mathias Kiwanuka, who was the centerpiece of the rumor that was being circulated in February.

As it stands now, the Giants are nearing the end of March with no resolution yet on the Plaxico Burress situation, and no player on the roster who would be able to take over his level of production. With this report that they had previously gone back and forth in negotiating for Edwards, it would seem likely that they might try to haggle with the Browns again once Burress' fate is sealed. At that point, it wouldn't be surprising if they did include Kiwanuka or another defensive lineman considering their bounty at that position.

The Browns might not be their only potential trading partner either. After all, if Edwards is traded, that leaves Donte Stallworth as the Browns' No. 1 receiver, and even if Stallworth avoids jailtime or league suspension, his declining skillset is not worthy of being anyone's No. 1. Therefore, Giants general manager Jerry Reese has also likely been putting in some time on the horn with Arizona Cardinals general manager Rod Graves, the latter of whom still has a tenuous grip on the contract of Anquan Boldin. Boldin was the subject of another trade rumor involving the Giants and Kiwanuka in February, and a swap between the Giants and Cardinals would seem to make more sense on the surface.

As for the other options available, the Giants have reiterated that they are not interested in Torry Holt, the best of the remaining free agents, and with Manningham already on the roster as the team's development project, it's unlikely they would rely on a draft pick to come in and contribute right away. Rest assured a move will likely be made before the start of 2009.

Video of the Bungy Jump

Finally decided to add the video of the Bungy jump. Pretty fucking awesome. Took me a while to get to the edge (they tie your feet and I was in no rush anyways with my EXTREME fear of heights). But really awesome to relive the video. Figured I'd share with my blog readers:

Enjoy!

Jew or Not Jew?

Jews love to point out which celebrities are Jewish. Sometimes we do it to evoke the "oh wow, I didn't know that" reaction (example: Elizabeth Berkeley a.k.a. Jessie Spano). Other times, we do it to brag (Emmanuelle Chriqui) or to contradict common stereotypes (Sandy Koufax).

But the problem with playing this game is that there is no definitive source for proving (or disproving) a celeb's Jewishness.

The solution: Jew or Not Jew. It is a comprehensive database of Jewish celebrities, replete with facts and photos and a convenient search bar. It quantifies each celebrity's Jewishness, in terms of birth history, how they are viewed by the public, whether they look and act Jewish, and a "wildcard" criterion of kvell (pride). Most entries are factually accurate, but liberties are taken for the sake of humor.

Finally....much like Scrabble players use Webster's, Jewish Geography players have their Jew or Not Jew. H/T to Devin Carney for this wonderful find.

Just Drove Past The New Yankee Stadium...

...And it's looking really nice. I'm very excited for baseball to begin. It's not quite done yet (anyone know how long until that Metro North stop comes?), but I'm sure they'll be working right through the exhibition games to the April 16th Opening Day. Now the question who is starting that game? I think, barring injuries, it's probably either CC or Joba. Either one would be exciting in its own way (Andy would be also just for his history with the team). I can't wait!

Is Juliet Leaving Lost?

Hearing there's going to a be at least two Lost deaths before the end of the season, my first guess of who was going to go was Juliet. Although this would end up with both Jack and Sawyer having only one woman to go after, it would seem that if Juliet's time were to come, this would be it. She just successfully delivered her first baby: a task she was brought to the island to do in the first place. She's seemingly found love and happiness on the island and now, with the Oceanic 6 back, that's seemingly all going away. So the storyline would seem to set her up for death (and whatever that actually means on this show).

But now there's this new from Ausiello which says that she may be joining another show as well. Although supposedly only in a guest role, this could be the final sign of a Juliet farewell. I would miss her. Although she got off to a rough start on this show (as one of the Others, just another "bad guy"), but she's redeemed herself many times over and become a quite endearing foil to Kate's self-serving personality.

Who else could I see beneath the ground before this season is all said and done? Desmond or Penny (ambiguous scene with Ben before he left the mainland to come back to the Island), Miles or Faraday (Miles has seemed to live with the dead anyway and Faraday has been halfdead since Charlotte died...and Sawyer's description of where he is was quite ambiguous -- though I think the latter is just helping to build the Swan), or, more unlikely, someone big like Sun, Sayid, Sawyer or Jin (though I think they're all staying).

While I have other shows I watch and enjoy, once again I feel like Wednesday can't come quickly enough.

Namaste Lost Recap

Needed to get to this past week's Lost episode. It was one of those episodes which was good, but not great. Doc Jensen does a great job of recapping it as usual. But we learn certain things that make us reach into our past Lost experience and give a little "aha" (including that interesting connection between Ben's capture in by the Losties and Sayid's capture in the last episode)

The first was the runway. When I started realizing that everything on Lost has a purpose. I was wondering why Kate and Sawyer were building a runway for the Others and now we know. But how did they know that a plane would need to land on the island three years later? Does Ben know more than he's telling? Did Richard or Jacob and/or Christian Shephard tell them to?

And speaking of Christian...does the monster/the whispers have something to do with him? Did you see how both occurred right around Sun and Lapidus seeing him? Interesting...

Speaking of Frank Lapidus, he took a much different tone this episode. He was filmed in a different light. He spoke almost monotone the entire episode and I wasn't sure whether this was to show his calm or hint to us that there's something evil about him. It was a cross between Christian Bale's Batman voice and a controlled killer. Sort of scary. I wonder what his relation is to the Island. He was supposed to be piloting the Oceanic 815; if he had, would the history of things have turned out differently (although, with him being an alcoholic, the plane could have crashed before it even got to that part as well).

According to Wikipedia, the name Lapidus has three possible originis: it could be derived from the Latin word for stone, it was a common name of the ancient Roman Consul, and it was the name of Devorah, the prophetess', husband. Since names are never by accident on this show, all of these could help to explain his purpose.

We now know a little more about Ethan and Radzinsky. But is also makes us wonder how they survived the Purge (though Radzinsky's death could have possibly been before the Purge). For Ethan, maybe it was because he was so young? Maybe he never knew his real parents (and why his last name is different)? Maybe Ethan and Radzinksy and a few others turned against DHARMA and helped out with the Purge? I'm pretty sure we'll find out more about that.

Also, because or Radzinsky, we know a little more about the Swan. This is the hatch that the Losties originally found with Desmond inside it. Radzinsky has blueprints and a model for it and then later was an inhabitant of it (who became crazy and killed himself).

Lastly, when Ajira airlines crashed, Ilana, who was accompanying Sayid said a name that could have been either Sayid or Sarah. I reached back into my Lost history and realized there was a Sarah: Jack's ex-wife. It would be much simpler if she had said "Sayid" but if she said "Sarah" (as many others have noticed), it could be very, very interesting...

Also, it may be a red herring, but there's talk of a big season-ending Lost wedding. Wouldn't that be interesting? Who would be getting married? All of those possible names are really interesting and I can't wait. As always, Lost can give you some answers as they did, but it just opens up a million other doors. Love it.

Free Chick-Fil-A for March Madness

I don't know of any in NYC, but this stuff is good

Why Don't Teams Up By 3 Foul?

I need to figure something out. And I've needed to figure it out for a while. But this blog finally gave me the forum to ask the question. Why don't teams, when they're up by 3 points and only time left for one shot foul? Why do they give the other team a chance to hit a 3 and tie it up rather than foul and make it almost impossible for the other team to tie it up?

This happened in the Siena win over Ohio State. Ohio State was up by 3 points with time for one shot for Siena at the end of the first overtime. Instead of fouling on the Siena players, Ohio State allowed Ronald Moore to tie the game with a three (they would later also allow him to beat them with a three in the following OT which is a problem in and of itself).

So how could have this been avoided? Ohio State should have fouled Siena before they coucould attempt a shot. This way, the maximum amount of points they could have scored was two points. The chance they would have gotten another shot at the ball is minimum. They would have to make the first, miss the second, grab the rebound and score. The degree of difficulty of this is MUCH higher than making a three pointer.

Although it makes all the sense in the world, this doesn't seem to happen many times if ever. I'm not sure if Thad Matta sent his Buckeyes out there to foul, be he should have. Coaches are always worried about criticism that their methods will make the game boring or criticism that they're stopping the clock. But the point is not to avoid criticism, but to win, so I think more teams should think about fouling at the end of the game to preserve their leads.

The Yankee Ticket Situation

I went a little nuts yesterday. I guess to make up for missing out on the 15 game Saturday package I wanted (and which the Yankees didn't even have the decency to tell me I wasn't getting), I bought 14 different games yesterday including opening day, the second Cubs preseason game, Red Sox Saturday in August, Mets, two different Phillies games, Angels and a few others.

The problem is that I realized there's not a lot of teams that you want to see on the Yankees schedule. Who really excites you? My list was 1) Boston, 2) Mets, 3) Phillies...and then maybe the Rays and Angels (though the Angels always kill the Yanks when I go). But should I get excited about the Mariners or Orioles or White Sox or A's (maybe the A's this year)? I hate to sound ungrateful (I did go to 21 different baseball games last year in 4 different ballparks and saw all types of crappy teams) but I just feel there's very few teams that excite me to see.

That being said, I am tremendously excited for the new stadium. Sliding Into Home has some awesome photos to get everyone excited. The biggest problem for me is that the Yankees really, really botched the ticket system this year. They made the closest sections totally unaffordable. The absolute closest seats are like $2,500 each. The ones between the bases and close are $1,525. Right behind that is $900 and the next area is $525. Who can afford that, especially in this economy? Have they heard about the recession going on?

Well what happened was that season (and half season) ticket holders moved back to the next section. This pushed back all the rest of the partial plans and those were based on seniority. Then they totally closed out the people like me who didn't have great seniority. To make it worse for those without any plan, they allowed the season and half season licensees to go on to the ticket site on Thursday and buy as many tickets as they wanted.

So when I finally went on yesterday to buy, I wasn't willing to pay a minimum of $525 a seat and I got a lot of crappy seats. We're talking about the top corners of the grandstand (with one game in the back corner of the bleachers). And a few of the games came up as $5 seats which I thought may just be because of $5 nights but I'm realizing that they're probably obstructed seats. All they say on the website is "foul pole area", though, and NOTHING about being obstructed. I wonder why they have an obstructed seats in the new stadium at all, but I'm hoping it's just the case of "there may be the foul pole in your way."

Either way, I feel bad for those who are searching through what is left (and really, if you didn't win the lottery, you're probably screwed). Unless the Yankees left some seats available for others, it's going to be slim pickings. The Yankees will have a big, new stadium and some exciting, new players but I fear that many of its fans will be shut out the first season.
