It looked innocent enough, but Jorge Posada grabbing his hamstring last night turns into Jorge Posada on the DL this afternoon. Sweeny Murti reported it on WFAN according to Peter Abraham. Even with A-Rod almost back, this is a tremendous blow to the Yankees. Hopefully it's a minor injury and 15 days will do the trick. But how they're talking, that might not be the case. Wonder if the catcher called up will be from within the organization or a trade will be made. I think they need to do something because we saw last year how ineffective Jose Molina becomes when exposed to everyday duty.
I have to agree with Steven Goldman of the Pinstriped Bible (picture from his blog) who is frustrated the Yankees failed to sign one decent catcher in the offseason knowing 1) that Posada is 37 and is not as injury-free as in his younger days, and 2) that without him in the lineup, they missed a huge cog. Just see the game winning at bat against the Angels on Friday of proof of his value. Maybe it's time to trade someone from all that pitching depth to help out behind the plate. I'm not sure Kevin Cash (a career .184/.248/.285 hitter in the Major Leagues) is a viable option. I don't think, as River Avenue Blues says, that Francisco Cervelli is an option. He's hitting just .190/.266/.310 at AA Trenton. I think they'll have to make a 40-man move to get another catcher on the roster.
Meanwhile, the weather forecast, according to New Stadium Insider, is "raw & cool, but playable". I have a winter hat and a raincoat just in case for my trip to NYS tonight. This is my 7th game at NYS (I know, ridiculous), and all 7 times the forecast was for rain and I have not had one delay (and 5-1 coming into tonight). So hopefully that will be the case tonight. This may be a night that I drink beers just to stay warm. Though, with how the Yanks have been playing against the Red Sox, I may be drinking for other reasons as well.
