Yankees Finally Name Their Bowl Game (And It's Not "William Barthman Jeweler Bowl")

We knew about it since September. We even guessed on the name. But it's official now after this came from a press release from the New York Yankees:
The New York Yankees announced today that the college football Bowl Game to be held at Yankee Stadium is scheduled for December 30, 2010, and will be called the New Era Pinstripe Bowl with a four-year title-sponsorship agreement in place with headwear and apparel manufacturer New Era Cap Company, Inc...

The New Era Pinstripe Bowl will be nationally televised by ESPN, which has also secured national and local radio rights for ESPN Radio. The agreement for both broadcast platforms is for six years through the 2015 game.
The name is OK, but much better names were suggested by NYaT readers including: "Empire Bowl", "Yankee Bowl", "Big Apple Bowl", "Steinbrenner Bowl", "Citi Bowl", "Goldman Sachs Bowl", "Metlife Bowl", "William Barthman Jeweler Bowl" (my personal favorite), "Bronx Bowl", "Geico presents the Big Apple Bowl", "Boss Bowl", "Yankee Bowl", "YES Network Big Apple Bowl", "Freedom Bowl", "America's Bowl", "Liberty Bowl" (already taken), "Twin Towers Bowl", "Stars & Stripes Bowl", "National Bowl", "Metro Bowl, "Urban Bowl", "Empire Bowl", "Transit Bowl", "Amsterdam Bowl", "Skyscraper Bowl", "Verizon Bowl", "Hess Bowl", or "J.P. MorganChase Bowl".

The biggest issue is that the game will exclude the Yankees from hosting the National Hockey League's "Winter Classic" due to that game being played on New Years day. I thought there may be some flexibility on the date of the game in future years, but this part of the release makes me think there isn't:
There is a four-year agreement extending through 2013 for the Big East and Big 12 to participate in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium. In future years beyond 2010, games will take place no earlier than Christmas Day and no later than New Year's Day.
And that's a real shame because I think hockey at the New Yankee Stadium would have been awesome. But with the set-up required for the Winter Classic, there wouldn't be enough time to do both the bowl game and the Winter Classic. That is, unless they moved the date of the Winter Classic (or did two Winter Classics)...and I don't see a problem doing that either.

The weird part about the announcement is that the website in the release (www.newerapinstripebowl.com) now actually points to a Yankee website link that is titled "Legends Bowl." While they came up with a name in the end, I'm guessing that there was a lot of debate and names thrown around. I can deal with the bowl name since Pinstripes are in it, but I would be more excited for hockey at Yankee Stadium.

  1. The Yankee's ground crew is going to have quite the task ahead of them.

  2. The good news is they can do the YMCA while they're setting up the field

  3. I really like the Pinstripe Bowl logo. The facade/bunting makes it look distinctly Yankees. I also have no real objection to the name, aside from the ubiquitous sponsor. At least New Era sounds less stupid than papajohns.com or Little Caesars Pizza Bowl.

I sort of agree with Andrew's disappointment regarding the lack of a Winter Classic at Yankee Stadium. I would have loved to see hockey in the Bronx, and I would have aggressively fought for a ticket.

That said, lots of places will and have hosted a Winter Classic hockey game...Fenway, Wrigley, etc. How many baseball stadiums host a college football game? None that I know of. It's especially rare to host an outdoor, non-domed bowl game so far north. I think this is a unique privilege for Yankee Stadium.

  4. I'd love to see a rematch of "The Greatest Game Ever Played." Two brothers face off against each other in the New Yankee Stadium.

  5. AT&T Park (I think that's the name of the San Fran park now) hosted a bowl game last year and Arizona had hosted one in the past. Fenway, Wrigley and Dodger Stadium may all host in the near future. And the Yankees hosted some at old Yankee Stadium, most recently in 1952.
