Giants beat Jets in "secret coin toss" to win 1st game in New Meadowlands Stadium

The NY Daily News is reporting that the New York Giants have defeated the New York Jets in a "secret coin toss" to win the right to play the first home game in the New Meadowlands Stadium.  (H/T Michael J. Nichols)

This means that the Giants are already undefeated in their new home, while the Jets are 0-1 and are once again opening the season on the road...a feat they accomplished in 19 out of the 26 seasons they played in Giants Stadium.  But here is my favorite part of this story:

The Jets, who split the $1.7 billion it cost to build the New Meadowlands Stadium, were informed by the NFL that the Giants had won the secret coin toss that the NFL conducted.  Jets owner Woody Johnson was outraged not because the Jets lost, but because no Jets representatives were present at the secret coin toss.  No word on whether the NFL or the Giants will bother to eventually tell the Jets what company buys the stadium's naming rights.

And just like that, my Monday brightened up.

  1. There's a similar story in the documentary The Battle of Comm. Ave, which chronicles the rivalry between BC and BU hockey.

One year the schools were slated to meet in the Beanpot and both schools wanted to wear the same color sweater. BC coach Snooks Kelly called up BU coach Jack Parker and they argued about it. Parker suggested he flip a coin to decide the issue. So over the phone, with no witness present, Parker flipped a coin. You can guess who won that one.

On the flip side, that probably represents the last time in history a BU guy outsmarted a BC man.

That said, good for the Giants. Here's to 26 more years of second class citizenship for the J-E-T-S.

  2. The league has been backtracking and did a big mea culpa when they gave both the Giants and the Jets first home games. The Giants will play on that Sunday and the Jets will play that Monday.

And Giants PR man Pat Hanlon got in a little jab at the Jets: "We look forward to playing the first regular-season game ever in the new stadium. We have a great new home, and it's right next door to Giants Stadium, a building that housed our three Super Bowl championship teams. We look forward to building the same legacy for our new stadium, and it starts on Sept. 12."

    Booya!
