NBA Draft Moving from NYC to NJ

Garden State FTW!  On the heels of Andrew's email to me earlier today, in which he (smugly) indicated that the New Jersey Nets lost $64 million in FY 2009, we have just learned that the NBA draft is moving from NYC to Newark.
Scenes like this will soon be taking place in New Jersey.
The draft will be held at the Prudential Center (the new two-year home of the Nets, baby!) in June 2011.  The draft had been held in Manhattan every year since 2001.  Expect the announcement from NBA Commissioner David Stern tonight before the Nets' season opener in Newark vs. Detroit.

  1. A) What is FTW?
    B) I wonder what prompted this? I mean, what does the Jerz have that NY doesn't?
    C) Did you enjoy that, Jay?

  2. FTW = "For the win!"

(it refers to the old Hollywood Squares show) -- http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=ftw

I very much enjoyed that, Sarah. And for the record, despite my desire to believe that this move is due to New Jersey's awesomeness, I think the NBA is hemorrhaging money and it's cheaper for the league to hold the draft in Newark than in NYC.

  3. Chris Christie needed something so people stopped hating NJ for just a little bit. And this has NOTHING to do with NJ's supposed "awesomeness"; this is a league that may be locked out during the draft next year and instead of holding it in Radio City, they're looking for the cheapest option. And you can't get any cheaper than Newark.

  4. Flag on the play. Unnecessary roughness, Andrew Katz, late hit on the unpaid volunteer blogger. 15 yards from the spot of the offensive comment. First and 10, Jay Hyne.

  5. AND the Nets lost $64 million last year which, considering their payroll was less than that, is quite a feat. I'm pretty sure they sold 10 tickets the entire season to accomplish that.

  7. Sorry, Jay. I'm sure the NFL will fine me for my unnecessary roughness
