At the bottom of this post are the odds for the next 2 evenings of madness. This is what one resorts to when their bracket has blown up----- Texas, Purdue, and Pitt not good picks. At least I am ahead of Rochelle Rochelle in the NYaT pool!
I am sure I am not alone in rooting for the dogs--- and I don’t mean the Huskies---- they are either a pick ‘em or a favorite. I mean the underdogs: VCU, Richmond, and Butler. I’ll even throw in BYU, why not. I’ll root for Jimmer, who was graced with a name that somehow reminds me of the famous Johnny Cash song “A boy named Sue” --- worth a download.
Interesting side note is that VCU and Richmond make Richmond the first city to have 2 sweet 16 teams since LA in 2007. More on that go here.
Estimates place the total dollar amount of American office pools in excess of $3 billion, with the total cost in lost productivity in the neighborhood of $1.8 billion. Wow, how about them apples.
It was nice to see that Yahoo in their matchup breakdown includes the spreads. To me it is essential in doing any analysis, the oddsmakers in Vegas--- or I guess in the Caymans for the on-line bookies, do their hard work and tell us what the spread is. Sometimes I think there are wrinkles. VCU has blown out its last 3 opponents after barely getting in---- how much is that a factor in the spread vs. Florida State?
Other times the spread can move if a lot of money goes on one side. In the Princeton vs. Kentucky game I have to imagine a lot of money went on Princeton to cover, which they did easily and almost won. The bookies probably got slaughtered on that one. I actually saw a little bit of the Seminoles hitting 7 three’s in the first half. Not much of an upset but I think VCU will move on in the first ever 10 vs. 11 seed game. They are playing loose, have the athletes to play with anyone, and are a hot team in FU mode (no one believed they should be in and they are proving themselves old school style. That is a tough combo to face.
The biggest spread is the Richmond Spiders getting 10 ½ vs. Kansas. They are called the Spiders because a sportswriter many years ago used the term for one of their baseball pitchers??? They are the only NCAA team with the nickname Spiders. Personally spiders don’t bother me…… they eat bugs so that’s a good thing….. snakes are another issue. Did you know Richmond beat VCU back in December? I think their luck runs out against a tough Kansas team, who has too much size with the Morris brothers and depth. I think a well coached team like Kansas benefits greatly when they have the extra time to prepare for this round. This is the same reason I think BYU will go down. Billy the kid is a good coach and will figure a way to beat Jimmer and co. And even a casual college hoops observer knows they kicked one of their best players off the team within the last month or so.
So my picks if sports gambling outside of Vegas (and the Carribean) was legal:
SDSU, Florida, Duke, Butler to win outright, UNC, Kansas win & cover, OSU, VCU. Enjoy the madness. Comments are encouraged!
