You Can Get With This or You Can Get With That Week 10

Get with David Garrard not with Tom Brady
Follow David Garrard to Fantasy success this week (KC Star)

The New England vs. Pittsburgh game promises to be a doozy on Sunday night, pitting two of the NFL’s best teams head-to-head under the lights. The Steelers' running defense is the best in the league, but their passing defense is only so-so. One might think this gives Brady some potential against a highly touted defense, but the Patriots passing game is primarily a short, dink and dunk, affair, which more closely resembles a running game. Woodhead and Welker better be ready for some big hits when they come over the middle. Couple that with the fact that Brady hasn’t been the same without Moss, and I’m very concerned about his performance this week. In his past 3 games he hasn’t topped 250 yards or a 60% completion percentage.

David Garrard is fresh off a bye and is ready to it to stick it to the league’s worst passing defense. The Jaguars will be home, where Garrard always plays better, and in his last game against Houston Garrard had a QB Rating of 106. Garrard is having a better season than people realize with 13 TDs and he’s been hot of late with 9 of those 13 have come in his last 4 games.

Get with LeGarrette Blount not with LaDainian Tomlinson

LaDainian Tomlinson has been a key component to the Jets success this season on offense. With Greene’s early struggles, LDT stepped up in a big way. However, the last few weeks have not been kind to the veteran rusher as he hasn’t topped 60 yards or 4 yards-per-carry in his last 3 games. Against the Browns, an improving defense that shut down the Pats last week, I think the Jets will start to get the ball to Greene more. The young running back’s legs are fresh and ready to go, and going forward I think we will see much more of Greene in this time-share.

LeGarrette Blount has run hard since being given the bulk of the carries for the up-start Tampa Bay Bucs. Last week the stingy Atlanta run defense limited Blount’s touches and production, but this week against a soft Carolina run defense that lost its middle linebacker for the season last week, Blount will get back to business.

Get with Hines Ward not with DeSean Jackson

There is no doubting DeSean Jackson’s talent, but as is the case with most diminutive, big-play receivers, Jackson can be feast or famine. Vick’s comeback from injury is good for Jackson, but a game against the Redskins isn’t. Earlier this year Jackson only had 19 yards on 3 receptions against them, and in 5 career games he only has 150 yards. This week I’m leaning towards famine for Jackson.

Hines Ward, the savy vet, gets to go against a very young Patriots secondary this week. The Pats are 29th in the league against the pass, which should mean good things for everyone in the Steelers pass attack. Wallace is the big play guy, but Ward is a good player to rely on to get his looks and catches and against New England he has 4 TD’s in 6 games. The past couple of weeks have not been good for Ward’s stats, but I’ll bet he gets back on track against the porous Pats secondary.

  1. Here's an amazing 2010 stat from Football Outsiders:

For quarterbacks, the Houston Texans are the friendliest defense in the league. They've allowed opposing passers to average -- average, mind you -- 310 yards and 2.5 touchdowns per game. The average quarterback has put up 20.6 fantasy points against them in a given week. Compare that to Philip Rivers, who got the pleasure of playing the Texans last week. Rivers averages a comparable 327 yards per game, but only 2.1 touchdowns. His average fantasy performance, even after torching the Jacksonville Jaguars, is only 18.9 points per game. Let's reiterate that to make it clear: Starting whoever plays the worst pass defense in football has been more productive than starting the very best quarterback in fantasy football so far this season.
