A Giant Debacle

I don't even know where to begin with this post.  But in my lifetime as a Giant fan, I have only experienced two losses that even come close to this - the 2003 wild card game against San Francisco and the 2006 loss to the Titans.

As I watched the first half from a Hoboken bar, I figured there was no reason to worry.  The Giants were on their way to wrapping up the division and we had seen Michael Vick limp, if only briefly, at the hand of Justin Tuck.  24-3 was the score at the half.  If the Giant defense played the way they did in the first half, the Giants would breeze through to a long needed victory against the hated Eagles.

The second half began with an Eagles TD, but the Giants responded back, making it a 31-10 game.  With under eight minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Eagles managed 3 TDs, sparked by an unexpected onside kick and by Michael Vick's fantastic running game.  To my amazement, the game was tied.

I already knew that the Giants were in trouble by the time the Eagles had closed it to seven, but the game was now tied and the Giants had just gone three and out on offense.  Matt Dodge, the unpredictable rookie punter, was ordered to put the ball away from kick-returner extraordinaire and showman Desean Jackson, creating as much hangtime as possible and allowing them to take as much time off of the clock as possible to force overtime.  Instead, Dodge punted the ball on a straight line drive to Jackson, who briefly fumbled the ball, but then returned the ball for a TD, stopping to prance around before entering the end zone.

I sat in disbelief at how this could have happened.  Rather than delve into my hatred for the Eagles and their two stars of the game, here is what I think happened (Although I will say that Desean Jackson's antics better stop because it will come back to haunt him at some point.  If only the Giants had realized he was going to prance around the 1 yard line they could have knocked him down, forcing overtime.  Or better yet, the officials should have flagged him for unsportsmanlike conduct before entering the end zone).

The offense became flat in the second half, as the Giants were never able to fully establish a running attack.  On top of it, quite simply, the Giant defense got lazy in the fourth quarter and couldn't get past the Eagles offensive line.  They left too many receivers with too little coverage and the offensive line prevented the Giants from getting anymore good shots at Vick.  But what really killed them is what has killed them all year long - special teams.  They were completely unprepared for the onside kick and blew the game for them in the last 14 seconds of regulation.

What does this mean for the Giants?  Well, first off, it means that they need to win out in their final two games.  With some help they will still make the playoffs, but certainly could have benefited from the # 2 seed and therefore a first round bye week.  Second, Tom Coughlin is officially on the hot seat.  I was never a fan of Tom Coughlin from the beginning but grew to like him as he changed his demeanor.  However, such a loss in unacceptable for a team that has showed it is capable of much more and he may not be able to survive another end of season collapse.  Third, Matt Dodge's days as punter are numbered.  Not only was he unable to handle the basic task of punting a ball out of bounds and away from Desean Jackson but he did the exact opposite of what Coughlin wanted and Coughlin let him know it after the game, right on the field and in front of his teammates.  Think Jerry Reese might be placing a call to Jeff Feagles today?

Anyhow, what are your thoughts?

  1. Tough one. and I was there for it. Though in fairness it was 31-10 when I left the stadium, so I could just pretend they won.

Yes Dodge is terrible and needs to go. You could defend him by pointing out everyone else who failed (and it really was a complete team effort) but most of those guys have made plays this year. Dodge hasn't. I find it hard to believe that in an age of globalization there is't a single person amongst the billions of huddled masses who could kick a football with more consistency.

Secondly - the Giants just seemed to run out of gas once Vick started to break containment. Can't overlook the fact that they were playing on a short week on a cold day - had to be tough on the defense.

All that said, the Giants DON'T need help to make the playoffs. As of now they are sitting in the 6 seed. All they need to do is win out. They control their own destiny. That has to be what the theme is this week. You play to make the playoffs. The Giants have put themselves in position to do just that. Time to get it done.

  2. There are days when ESPN.com, SportsCenter and any sports highlight show is not any option and yesterday was the perfect example of that. It was a horrible, inexcusable and demoralizing loss.

But the good news is that Green Bay and Tampa Bay both lost and the Giants control their own destiny (as I saw Ari just posted). And let's say the Giants win out and New Orleans loses twice (and they play at ATL and vs Tampa so it's very possible). Well then the Giants would play the NFC West winner in the first round which is about as good a match-up as you can get.

In the end, we all knew the Giants weren't as good as they were playing and that they were better off playing on the road in the playoffs anyways. As long as they can respond from the shell-shock, they'll be fine going forward.

As much as this sucks now (and I can't even look at the ESPN.com homescreen)

  3. true story. IF they can bounce back. they have been resilient in the past, hopefully they can be again.

and maybe matt dodge should spend a little less time working on his arms (impressively huge, also exceedingly useless for a punter who cant tackle anyway) and a little more time working on his actual craft (you know, punting)

  4. The San Fran loss was the worst, tho, since it ended their season.

Dodge was awful (no doubt) but I think he's going to be the scapegoat for a lot of other people. Just awful all around.

And I agree the Giants D looked gassed. They've had problems closing out teams all season and a good team was eventually going to beat them because of it

  5. I was just playing around with the ESPN playoff machine (amazing time waster) and it looks like a Giants win next week at Green Bay would clinch them a playoff spot. Not the easiest thing in the world to do, but, hey, if they're going to make the playoffs now, that's the way they need to do it.

  6. I would be shocked if that punter is still in a Giants uniform next week. He is not the only one to blame of course. But to be a punter and not be able to kick it out of bounds is insane. The only out this guy has is that the snap was high. Overall a historic gut punch game. Another example of how anything is possible in sports. I have not seen every game but realize the Giants are not a great team. This will be a big test to see what they are made of. The year they beat the Patriots they were not that great either....... ANY GIVEN SUNDAY!
