"Kenny Powers Days of Burning Ass Are Done..."
"...and that's not a homosexual reference"
Finally made my way to watch the first season (6 episodes worth) of the new HBO series Eastbound & Down. I have to say it was worth the 6 episodes. The show is not great, but it is entertaining and Danny McBride is awesome. And Will Ferrell is an executive producer (and has a role on the show as well) which is always a good thing for a show like this. Was very glad to see that HBO has renewed the series for a second season.
Here is a description of the show from that release: Eastbound stars Danny McBride as Kenny Powers, a star pitcher whose self-destructive behavior knocked him out of the major leagues. He returned home to North Carolina to teach gym at the middle school he once attended, but eventually scored another big-league job offer.
Well, not exactly with that last part. But you'll have to see the 6 episodes to figure that out. It's currently on HBO on Demand and is worth a watch. The show is a combination of Talladega Nights (with the whole comeback angle), The Wrestler/Rocky Balboa (with the total mess in life and the steroids), and Hanging With Mr. Cooper (with the former start teaching high school). The show is so crude, it's funny ("You're Fucking Out" is his catch phrase).
My one biggest peeve with the show is that none of the baseball players they have from Kenny Powers on down can actually throw or hit. We're supposed to believe he can throw 100 MPH; the guy looks like he can't throw 50 MPH. And Craig Robinson (Darryl from The Office) is great as a long-time nemesis of Powers, but my grandmother has a nicer swing than he does.
That being said, I'm excited for Season 2 of Eastbound & Down.
