A Standing O:...and the Colorado Rocky Mountain High

It's been a while since we got some knowledge from Alex O but he's back today with a post about the New York Knicks, Gallo, and, well, John Denver as well. So whether you're Italian, American, or from the Jersey Shore, you'll love our next Standing O:
----------------------------
“And the Colorado Rocky mountain high!” John Denver (Great lyrics)

Some have missed Gallo in a Knickerbockers uniform (MSNBC)
Here are some thoughts and links about the Knicks we traded for Melo, Burps (billups) etc. Gallinari, Chandler, Felton, Mozgov, even the corpse formerly known as Eddy Curry is gone but not forgotten. Knickerblogger had a good piece about saying good bye to Gallo. Worth checking out even if it is a bit much. Better yet was the comment I pasted below, from an Italian guy who watched Gallo’s Dad and D’Antoni play back in the day:

You may not know, but there’s a weeping nation out there.
There’s a generation of italian like me that fell in love with the nba in the 80′, thanks to the men that played then. before the dunks and the no look passes, it was the great personalities. Kareem.Magic.Bird.Jordan.Doc.Moses.Akeem. Ewing. the bad boys.
and when we were in awe at watching the gods, we followed a great italian team, lead by one of the greatest mind that we witnessed on a field, moustache men D’antoni.
I can assure you that he was that good, a stern general well different from the laid back coach of today.
In that team played Gallinari sr. A bruce bowen-type player, I had the luck to wath them play live and I can’t recall to saw him ever try a shot to the rim. defense was his thing, nothing more.
In that glorious days, our collective daydream was to see one italian player to finally succed on an nba field. to show that we are not bound to scramble for a ball with our feet in the mud, but that also the Italians can fly
Last year I finally had the occasion to visit the big apple, and obviously I dragged my wife at the Garden. I was graced with a (rare) great win over the 76ers, and Gallo (along with Douglas) was the leading force to the win.
Seeing him live to blossom into a king for Knicks brought to me all the lost memories of my generation ; the dream of us playground player to become an Nba star was now real. the quest had been fulfilled.
The icing on the cake was that happened in New York, the city that we consider part of ourselves. it’s not the global icon, it’s just the perfect blend of European and American flavours that we love.
I can assure you that Gallo felt the same: he truly truly loves new york.
Now the song has ended. the knicks dismissed Gallo like some high school sweetheart traded for the new flashy hot girl. just another victim of the summer of LeBetaDog.

Time will do us justice. for now...

I hope the Knicks fans can keep being patient. We should be able to keep the current seed into the playoffs if they play 500 ball. There is not huge room for error as the Sixers are playing well, and as we saw last night, the Pacers (and Bobcats), are not going to lie down. Our new Knicks must realize that they now have a bullseye on their back and teams will be jacked up for each game against the Knicks. I don’t think it is the same as teams gunning for the Heat, but along those lines. If the Knicks do not recover and take the back end of this home and home vs. the Pacers, expect renewed grumblings in Knicks nation and heightened criticism of D’Antoni. I say chill out and enjoy the ride, all they need to do is get in the playoffs. Then the second season will begin.

This is a good piece about Wilson Chandler who the Nugs fans are just beginning to enjoy watching. Gives some nice history on Will’s background growing up in a small town.

Sports Guy (Bill Simmons) did a good piece about missing a player after he is traded. He was weeping the loss of Kendrick Perkins--- who added extra pain for Celtics fans since he was not only integral in their recent title run, but also proved so important in the team falling short last spring vs. the Lakers. I include myself among those who thought the Celts were done when Perkins went down.

Here are some classic old pics of Michael Jordan when he was in college.

I think I enjoy them because they remind me of a time when I was a big fan of MJ when he played at UNC. His freshman year, the year he hit the jumper that helped (along with Fred Brown’s brianfart) give Dean Smith his first National Championship title, was a special team with Worthy and of course Sam “Big Smooth” Perkins. As a Knick fan I was forced to root against him for many years as he distributed so much pain on my beloved Knicks.

I will admit that I will be watching the Nuggets as my team to root for in the West. What’s not to love about a team who also goes by the nickname Nugs. There is a connection for my affection in all the ex Knicks--- especially Chandler and Gallinari (still out with a toe). I liked Felton in the short time we got to know him in a Knicks uni. I have no ill will for Al Harrington although I am aware that he is the proud recipient of one of the worst NBA contracts. I am sure glad he did not come back to MSG in the Melo deal. It was fun watching Will and Gallo develop, and I hope Mozgov does well there also. Hopefully he gets a chance to prove himself. Let’s not forget that the Knicks drafted Nene and dealt him promptly to get Antonio McDyess (disaster move).

The Nugs are 7-2 since the trade including a few blowout wins. They are an exciting young team to watch with the old Knicks plus Ty Lawson who is already very good, J.R. Smith an explosive player , and of course the perennial fan favorite Chris “Birdman” Anderson.

Another post from the Denver post gives you the latest on the Birdman and if you keep reading you can hear Mark Cuban’s take on the Knicks/Nugs trade.

I will close with a random note. On the list of top earning celebs last year, no surprise who was first and that the estate of Michael Jackson was second, but that ACDC was third was a shocker to many. I was amazed to learn that Back in Black sold 22 million albums in the USA. That means roughly 1 in 14 Americans bought the album. I am still bitter that my choice for our Senior Prom song of “You shook me all night long!” was denied. Time, can’t heal all wounds.

  1. I have to say, I've generally been impressed with Carmelo so far in NY. Especially since he has already notched one of his trademark buzzer beaters. He will continue to be a force, I have no doubts.

BUT, the Knicks have been just 6-5 since he arrived and all the guys Alex O. talked about departed. That includes a awful home loss to the Pacers, and 2 ugly losses to Cleveland (one of which was at MSG). More importantly, while the Knicks are still 2nd in the league in scoring (106.4 ppg) they are also 2nd worst in defense (allowing 105.8 ppg). Defense wins in the playoffs, and if the Knicks have any chance of making it out of the first round, D'Antoni needs to squeeze at least a little D out of these guys. Especially since they lack a true big man (as compared to, say, Dwight Howard or Al Horford).

Meanwhile, on the other side of the Hudson River, the Nets are 5-3 since acquiring Deron Williams. And those first three losses are pretty defensible (on the road vs. San Antonio and Houston, and a 1 point home loss to Phoenix). They recently extended their win streak to 5 with a nice 9-point win vs. Boston.

I know it sounds ridiculous, but the Nets are 5.5 back of the 8th playoff spot with 17 games left. Crazier things have happened, especially with a hot team like NJ. Could both the Nets and Devils pull off miraculous comebacks this year??

Yo AlexO, feeling they words on the Knicks. Right now they like a 40 degree day, cuz no one give a f*ck about a 40 degree day on Freemont St, you feel me? That sh*t go to 60 and brothers be bbq-ing. What I'm trying to say is once they Knicks get cooking in they playoffs, a whole lot a brothers gonna get they bbq on.

  3. Kwame, we are on the same page. Knicks need to get Burps back in the loop, get their rotation set with the bench, and then be ready for aome bbq (playoffs).

Nets got better in short term like the Nuggets, and both Nj and Denver had clouds over them waiting for the trade deadline. The Nets would have to catch fire in combination with others crapping the bed to make the playoffs. Right now you have Knicks, Sixers, Pacers, Bobcats fighting for 3 slots. We saw the fire in the Pacers the other day, and you know MJ will not let the Bobcats give up--- nor will Sials or Oakley. The run to the playoffs is always interesting......... and you are correct the Knicks fate depends on them playing consistent D. That is asking a lot. Should they get tot he playoffs it all depends on who they match up with as to the damage they could do, and hot they are playing going into the playoffs.

  4. Back-to-back losses to the Pacers, who put up 119 points against the Knicks. Tyler Hansbrough had 30 by himself, after scoring 29 against the Knicks on Sunday. TYLER HANSBROUGH. 59 POINTS IN TWO GAMES.

    Where. Is. The. Defense?

  6. Knicks had no D before the trade, why are people surprised they do not have D now. Burps second game back. Give him a couple game to get his stroke back. The Knicks schedule is favorabel for the rest of the season. Let's just hope they can figure a few things out between now and the playoffs.

Since I wrote this piece the Nugs blew out New Orleans in the big easy. They are hot! Let's seeif Gallo coming back disrupts things.

Speaking of the old stomping grounds...... I was back in the town of Cortlandt the toher day and was disapointed to see that the old Crompond Diner was replaced. I am intrigued by the lot formerly housing the biker bar Chumpers was for sale. Very interesting!

  8. from a story on last nights Nugs victory AT Atlanta.

The Knicks need to read this on how to improve---

The Nuggets improved to 9-2 since the blockbuster trade sending Anthony to the New York Knicks. Anyone can see they’re having more fun after dealing with the monthslong saga involving Melo’s future, spreading the ball around, playing fierce defense and exuding a chemistry that seemed to be missing before.

“It’s fun to play basketball the right way,” Kenyon Martin(notes) said. “It always has been, always will be. When everybody’s out there sharing the ball, everybody’s involved, it just makes everyone want to play that much harder on the defensive end.”
