Trivia Tuesday: Now Batting, Derek Jeter, Number Two

There has been a lot of talk recently about Derek Jeter's struggles, but there's no question that Captain Crunch will go down as one of the greatest Yankees ever.  Top 10?  Top 5?  That's up for debate.  But there's no debating that the Yankees organization will retire Jeter's No. 2 uniform number after he hangs up his spikes.

With that in mind, can you name the last Yankee to wear No. 2 before Jeter?

Bonus no. 1: Name the years in which the last Yankee before Jeter wore No. 2.

Bonus no. 2: Five former Yankees All-Stars wore No. 2 before Jeter.  Name them.

  2. Iron Mike Gallego is correct, and so are the years. Bobby Murcer is one of the bonus answers, but 4 still remain. Keep going!

  3. I'm lost here. Ben got the answers I would have gotten. I feel like the other #2s were all from the Babe Ruth-Joltin' Joe days. Any hints?

  4. Three of them are from DiMaggio's era and earlier. (But even two of those guys were prominent Yankees in their day.)

But one guy is a much bigger household name. Played in the 70's and 80's.

  5. I'm gonna guess Frank Crosetti, Joe Gordon, and Earl Combs.

As for the other name, I'll guess Rick Cerrone.

  6. Frank Crosetti is correct but the other three are not. Good guess with Cerrine though. Another hint: the recent guy was an infielder.

  7. Just to round out the rest of the answers, the three missing names were Graig Nettles, Snuffy Stirnweiss, and Red Rolfe.
