A Standing O: Schwartzel, Landis & Anthony etc.

Alex O is back with some thoughts on a little bit of everything from the Masters to the Knickerbockers with a little baseball in between. Some great notes in there from Alex who I have to apologize for posting this a day late (which is why some of the dates look funny). But it doesn't mean this Standing O is any less awesome. Enjoy!

You gotta love the Masters! I think it is even greater when a relatively unknown player wins it coming from behind. Charl (pronounced Sharl--- I never would have guessed that) Schwartzel, a 26 year old from South Africa won the Masters 50 years after Gary Player (also from South Africa) became the first International player to win the tournament. He was also the first player to win while making 4 birdies in the last 4 holes. It is always awesome to see someone win rather than the others lose. Schwartzel qualified for the Masters by being top 50 in the year end 2010 world rankings. He has been a pro on the European tour for 7 years and in 2011 has his PGA Tour Card. Pretty cool little story below from the AP:
Schwartzel had played in only one previous Masters — he tied for 30th a year ago — but he got a very helpful tutorial from a guy who's won more green jackets than anyone.

After finagling a lunch with six-time winner Jack Nicklaus at a charity function, he deftly broke the ice with one of their shared interests beyond the golf course.
"I've never met Jack. I was really excited," Schwartzel recalled. "I knew he sort of liked hunting a little bit. That's the way I got the conversation going, just by talking about hunting."

Of course, the talk soon turned to Augusta National.

And, boy, did the Golden Bear open up.

"I'm thinking it's going to be just a vaguely quick little thing, and he actually took the time to take me through all 18 holes," Schwartzel said. "The way he used to think around Augusta. The way he used to play it, which flags he used to attack."

I had a couple conversations recently about how the first 2 weeks of the baseball season should be in warm weather or dome/retractable stadiums.

It can be done and we roll the dice in Kansas City and St. Louis, and in Cincinnati. The Queen City should host opening day/first game like it did for so long------ where Kenesaw Mountain Landis was the first Commissioner of pro-baseball---- I passed the sign (announcing he was born there)many times in Milville Ohio. If you are interested you can read about his controversial job as commissioner---- dealing with the Black Sox scandal and being largely responsible for blocking the integration of baseball. Here is the nuts and blots:

AL: Tampa, Toronto, Texas, KC, Oakland, Seattle, Anaheim
NL: Miami(florida), Houston, St. Louis, LA, San Fran, Arizona, Milwaukee---- throw in Cincy

This makes so much sense that it will have to be done eventually---- just like the day after the Super Bowl becoming President’s Day and therefore a national holiday.

The Knicks had a great come from behind victory last night defeating the Indiana Pacers in Indy. They did it with Defense. I’ll repeat that; THEY DID IT WITH DEFENSE! Yes they are capable. They held the Pacers to 13 4th quarter points including no points in the last 3 minutes plus. Melo continues to show he is an elite scorer. He not only wants the ball on the offense end in crunch time--- where he schooled Granger to drain a 21 foot jumper with 5 seconds left BUT he came back and blocked Granger’s jumper to help seal the deal. After losing 9 of 10, the Knicks have won seven straight. If they get one more win they lock up the sixth seed which most likely means they play the Boston Celtics. Many Knicks fans would rather play the talentsFromSouthBeach but clearly the Celtics are struggling while Miami is playing well……. As witnessed by Miami giving the Celtics there worst defeat of the season yesterday. One other key point is that the Celtics are not the same team without Kendrick Perkins. The O’Neal brothers healthy or not do not wreak havoc on D like Kendrick Perkins. The Knicks play in the Garden Tuesday vs. Chicago---- the only team hotter than they are now, and then finish up in Beantown on Wednesday. These 2 games only matter for seeds. A winning record for the first time in 9 seasons and the first playoff appearance in 7 seasons. Besides the Knicks vs. Celtics (probable playoff series), I think a great match-up to watch is going to be the OK City Thunder vs. Denver (Old Knicks) Nuggets. Here is what the match-ups would be if playoffs started today.

If I had to guess I would predict a Bulls vs. Thunder NBA Finals, which would be a tremendous match-up of Derrick Rose vs. Kevin Durant ----- the 2 best players in the league not named Kobe or LeBron. It would be refreshing and I would be forced to root for Oklahoma City since I am just not capable of rooting for Da Bulls.

1 comment:

  1. After Celtics lose to Wiz with KG, Rondo, Ray Allen, and Pierce sitting out--- AND the Heat beat Hawks--- the seeds are set. Knicks get the Celtics.

This will be the first time Knicks meet Celtics since the Knicks beat Celts in first round game 5 in Boston--- the game where Ewing hit the three falling out of bounds. i think bird missed a dunk in the closing minute as well.
